Nintendo Switch Online Adding Classic NES Game Next Week

Nintendo Switch online adds the NES version Tetris December 12th. This inclusion will further strengthen the ever-growing selection of classic titles that Nintendo Switch Online offers.

Unlike PlayStation Plus and Xbox Game Pass, Nintendo's subscription service does not have a fixed schedule of new releases. However, it typically introduces new titles every few months, with such additions being more frequent around special events such as anniversaries. Most recently the first two Donkey Kong Land games hit Nintendo Switch Online in late November 2024 and beyond Mercs, Vectorman ToeJam and Earl Panic at the Funkotronwhich have been added to the Expansion Pack layer library.

Millions of players will lose access to online switching in 2026

Millions of gamers are set to lose access to the Nintendo Switch Online service in 2026, making them unable to play online, among other things.

NES edition Tetris is now set to follow next week, with Nintendo just announcing that the classic game will be added to the NSO content catalog on December 12th. This arrival may not come as a surprise to the most observant fans, because Tetris has already been confirmed to be coming to Nintendo Switch Online in late August 2024. Although NSO usually adds multiple titles to its library at the same time, the NES version Tetris will seemingly be an exception to this pattern, debuting on its own — unless Nintendo has some last-minute surprises in store, which isn't out of the question.

Tetris for NES just reached 35

Tetris will be hitting the Nintendo Switch Online library shortly after the 35th anniversary of its North American release. As with all NES titles, this upcoming addition will be available at all levels of Nintendo's subscription service. The game itself won't be the first rendition of a beloved classic to hit the NSO, as the Game Boy version Tetris is already available to Nintendo subscribers from February 2023.

The next NSO games could come in December 2024

Based on Nintendo's release patterns, it's possible that the NES version Tetris will not be the last addition to the NSO library in 2024. Since its launch in 2018, the NSO has regularly added several titles to its catalog each December. Even in the least eventful 2023, the service still received two new titles in December: 1080° Snowboarding and Harvest Moon 64.

So 2024 will either mark a new low for December NSO releases, or Nintendo will introduce at least one more surprise title alongside the NES version. Tetris. Looking at the slightly bigger picture, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa recently confirmed that the Switch 2 will support Nintendo Switch Online. Tetris so it's almost guaranteed to be playable on the company's upcoming device — unless its NSO tenure turns out to be unusually short-lived.

Nintendo Switch Lite

The Nintendo Switch Lite was released in 2019 as a low-cost handheld-only gaming system. Designed specifically for handheld gaming, it offers a lightweight design as part of its portable offering. The controllers are built into the system for handheld play, unlike the larger Switch models. The console itself retains full functionality as a standard Switch, but does not support docked mode.
