When No Man's Sky was first revealed in 2013, quickly endearing players to its procedurally generated open world and becoming one of the most anticipated indie titles. However, when the space exploration game was finally released three years later, it received disappointing reviews and lost most of its initially huge player base in a short period of time. Then came one of the most remarkable comebacks in video game history, in which Hello Games won back the favor of players with incremental improvements No Man's Sky with numerous patches and content drops over the years. Most recently, the action-adventure title has unlocked another indicator of its late but significant success.

Hello Games founder Sean Murray made the announcement on Twitter No Man's Sky it finally achieved a “Very Positive” rating on Steam, more than eight years after launch. He thanked the fans for the achievement and said: “You have no idea what this means to us.” According to SteamDB, the game's impressive Steam rating is based on 326,122 user reviews, of which 81.18% are positive, at the time of writing. Many in the comments below Murray's tweet No Man's Sky fans praised the developer's resilience, with one user calling the game's twist “the greatest redemption arc of all time”.
No Man's Sky continues to receive positive reviews and promising engagement
Over the past few years, No Man's Sky not only did it attract positive feedback, but it also saw growth in engagement time and time again. While these recent jumps in player numbers don't come close to the peak concurrent player count of 212,000 achieved at launch, they have shown that Hello Games has been able to regularly release engaging content since its release. Its last such peak came on July 22nd, when it had 54,951 concurrent players, a few days after the release of the Worlds Part 1 Update. The studio's commitment to listening to its community has even earned it a nomination for Best Community Support at The Game Awards 2024.
Recently, No Man's Sky players gained access to new expeditions that bring new challenges and rewards to the space game. The current lineup of expeditions is scheduled to last until the end of the Aquarius expedition on February 5, 2025. In addition to these updates, Hello Games Light No Fire is also in the works, which will be another massive open world game.
