For modern viewers who only watched in 2005, they got into the classic Dr. Who can be intimidating. The classic series, which has been running from 1963 to 1989, includes 26 seasons, seven doctors and dozens of companions. Its low production value, nature camps and sometimes outdated themes can also alienate for those who are used to a modern show. Yet many fans still want to see where it all started, and what gave him the inertial power that had survived her for more than 60 years.
For viewers who are curious about Classic Who, the fourth doctoral story “Ark in space” from the 12th season is an ideal place to start. Even the new ones who are probably familiar with the iconic Tom Baker, who comes to his doctor in this story. The companions Harry Sullivan and Sarah Jane Smith joined him, the other of whom reappeared in New Who and even got his own spinoff. Despite terribly special effects at age, the episode of a dynamic figure, fascinating sci-fi concepts, and most importantly, a truly engaging story.

What is “Ark in space” about?
At the beginning of this four -part series, Dr., Sarah and Harry will unexpectedly find themselves aboard a space station where most energy systems seem to have been closed. When they explore, the doctor concludes that the space station is an ark of the species, a home for several hundred people who have been placed in a suspended animation, they are likely to help humanity survive some disaster on Earth and sleeping for several hundred years. As the crew examines, he discovers that the station can play hosts of an undesirable extraterrestrial visitor. Harry and the doctor discover the strange foot of the slime, followed by a corpse of a strange insect creature.
Several members of the station staff wake up from the stasis: First, honey technology named Vira, which revives its leader Noah. While Vira has his doubts and suspicion of unexpected visitors, Noah borders direct hostility. The doctor tries to convince him that there is something wrong with the Ark, but without success. Noah ignored the doctor's advice and came across the creation of the slime when trying to start repairs and is attacked.
When Noah starts acting irregularly and undergoing physical changes, it is clear that these creatures are dangerous. Dr., Harry and Sarah Jane must find out the nature of these strange aliens known as Wirrn and what their goals are. Vira slowly begins to trust them, determined to protect the people that ARK carries. Together, along with several other revived passengers, they try to know exactly what they are against, against and save the last remnants of humanity.
What does the work “Ark in space” do?
Stimulation and tension
When the doctor and his companions arrive at the Ark, the place is terribly quiet. Oxygen is limited until they get the systems back online; Sarah Jane even loses consciousness from the barking. When they recover, Harry and the doctor explore – but she is teleported and inserted by mistake. Viewers do not know what is happening to her or how it gets out of it. Meanwhile, Dr. and Harry encounter extraterrestrial slime, sabotted systems, and eventually their lifeless.
As soon as Vira woke up, she revived the first Sarah and then Noah, there is a moment of relief-but thanks to Noah's suspicion, he is short-term. The pace of the story accelerates when the action is lifted: Noah is attacked and begins to go through mental and physical changes; The heroes are persecuted by extraterrestrial creatures. He tries to find answers and also tries to avoid Wirrn, creating a type of tension and curiosity that the new viewers loved. The doctor is more than smart to find out what Wirrn wants and how to beat them, but his time is limited and life hangs in balance.
Strong characterization
Dynamic characters are an essential part of any good story, and “The Ark in the Universe” does it well with its one -off characters. When Vira first wakes up from Stasis, it is described as cold and distant. Sarah Jane will tell Harry and the doctor that Sarah will live or die; It does not care clearly what the result will occur. Yet during the story we see it to grow. She and Noah were couples-when they get lost with extraterrestrial influence, mourn. But it also rises to the challenge and hires the position of the lead, determined to defeat Wirrn.
The Tardis team will also gain their moments of development. Perhaps the best example is the scene in which Sarah Jane voluntarily crawls through the line to connect the power cord. She is willing to expose herself to help others – but when she gets stuck, her fear and despair get better out of her. This is the place where the doctor enters the other side of the pipeline, begins to insult it. Furious, Sarah forgets her fear and crawls on the other hand – just as the doctor planned. With how close they were, he knew that it would just motivate her to enforce. As soon as Sarah escapes and begins to chew him, the doctor drops the act at a moving moment and said:
“You did amazingly, Sarah. I'm very proud of you, I'm really proud of you.”
Even smaller figures will make their moments shine. Noah, while struggling with mental damage to an alien attack, shows vulnerability and at the beginning redeems its hardness. He expresses his love for the virus and the faith she holds in, and gives her the courage she needs to take command. Two revival members of the crew, Rogin and Lytt, are initially afraid and confused, but thanks to the leadership of viruses and the doctor faces the situation with bravery and eventually save the day.
“Ark in space” is all that does Dr. Who Great
It cannot be denied that certain elements of the “Ark in the Universe” are shaken for modern viewers. “Slime Monsters” are clearly human actors under the layers of bubble cover; “Laser explosions” from the crew weapons are very cheap CGI effects. Harry Sullivan has a few moments of occasional sexism. But there is a lot for who the audience enjoys.
This episode contains a kind of levita that keeps the show fun without cheaper any tension or tension. In one scene, Harry with certainty throws the ball to deactivate the laser – only for laser to make him incredibly smooth. The doctor's Offhand Quips offers a comedy relief and at the same time demonstrate their quick joke. And of course, his tactics in the motivation of Sarah Jane through empty insults are obliged to induce laughter as soon as it is clear what he is doing.
Also interesting are sci-fi concepts. The Ark itself examines the ideas of a disaster that could affect the Earth in the future and what humanity could do to survive it. Wirrn itself is biologically fascinating: these are species of the universe that must lay poserin eggs. And when they reveal their history and motifs, moral questions arise – the cornerstone of a good sci -fi.
Finally, the new ones who may be most clearly recognized by medical love for humanity, one of the things that defined him over the decades. After the discovery of Stasis's room, his immediate reaction is admiration and expresses how impressed is that people will find a way to survive almost anything:
Homo sapiens. What inventive, invincible species. […] They survived floods, famine and plague. They survived cosmic wars and Holocausts, and now they are here, among the stars, waiting for a new life, ready for a coup eternity. They are untamed.
Finally, the durability and bravery he admires here is the support of the episode. They are topics Dr. Who Fans came to the treasure in modern and classic series and although they were 50 years old, “The Ark in space” depicts them in a way that can still resonate.
