Pokemon TCG pocket cards seem to be predetermined before you spin the carousel

Key things

  • Pokemon TCG Pocket players have found that the carousel doesn't seem to change what cards you get.

  • One player reported seeing the cards their friend later drew in Wonder Pick before their friend even picked a deck.

  • Others found that closing the carousel app and reopening it rewarded them with cards even though they never picked a deck.

There are a lot of rumors floating around about the Pokemon TCG Pocket. The big one is that if you find a slightly warped deck in the carousel, you get Shiny cards. Not true, but it turns out that the carousel itself may not have any impact.

Evidence

Yesterday, Reddit user Vurzey1 shared an interesting discovery. While their friend was examining the carousel, the Magical Pick was already showing the cards he had finally drawn. This means that the cards were determined before he chose the deck. In that case, it doesn't matter what you open on the carousel.

One example is hardly enough to say for sure, so the community started testing it for themselves. YouTuber ninaisnoob discovered that if you close the app before choosing a pack from the carousel and then reopen it, you'll automatically get the cards you'd unlock. Several others, including myself, have tried and found the same thing.

Nintendo leaker Centro tried an even more damning method. They selected one of the three decks in the main menu, toggled Airplane mode in front of the carousel, and found that “it will show you cards, but it won't be able to connect to the server to tell you [pack] You've selected.” They then closed the app, deleted it, disabled Airplane mode, reinstalled the app, and found the same cards.

So picking a warped pack won't magically give you Shinys. The carousel appears to be nothing more than a fancy way to show off your card before you open it. Still, it's fun to spin around.
