Announced at CES 2025, PUBG: Battlegrounds publisher Krafton announced that it has teamed up with Nvidia to create what it calls Co-Playable Characters, or CPCs, which “use AI to communicate with players and each other.” Krafton says, “Unlike traditional NPCs (non-player characters), CPCs are equipped with the ability to interact and collaborate with users because they understand game situations and respond to them in a human way.”
The company shared how it plans to implement CPC in PUBG: Battlegrounds, saying, “CPC will introduce a new companion powered by SLM (Small Language Model) called “Ally” that can communicate verbally and bond with the player. Alongside PUBG: Battlegrounds, Krafton has confirmed that CPCs will be coming to its simulation title inZOI, where CPCs will be in-game citizens who “follow fashion trends, spread rumours, develop reputations and more”.
While Krafton hasn't confirmed any CPC implementation date, the company is likely to be one of the first to use this kind of technology in its games, pushing the AI push even further.
