Sony recently released a statement on the current status of its PlayStation Plus subscription services, confirming that it plans to engage players by improving the service and driving players to higher subscription levels. In fiscal 2025, Sony boasted record profits for its gaming division, despite a decline in first-party PlayStation game sales. Part of the company's success in the past fiscal year was attributed to the growth of Sony's PlayStation Plus service.
PlayStation Plus offers subscribers access to PlayStation online multiplayer services, as well as other perks such as a curated library of games, cloud storage, exclusive discounts and more depending on the player's subscription level. New PS Plus games are added every month, including a mix of modern and classic titles, but some games are only included for a limited time and are retired after a certain amount of time on the service. Monthly free PS Plus games are part of the service at no additional cost if players claim them in time and remain subscribed to the service, while the Game Catalog available at higher levels includes a selection of games that can be downloaded at any time.
The Classics Catalog is a selection of retro PlayStation games that subscribers can download at any time.
PS Plus will lose at least 6 games in July 2025
Six titles have been confirmed to be coming to PlayStation Plus in July, including one of the best action RPGs of 2022 and a Final Fantasy game.
Sony promises to improve its PlayStation Plus service in the coming year
Confirmed in Sony's latest financial report, the company plans to double its PlayStation Plus offering to expand the service by constantly improving its content to keep subscribers engaged. The statement reads:
“Sony is focused on supporting the profitable growth of PS Plus by increasing user engagement and continuously improving its service and content offerings, as well as encouraging users to upgrade.”
PlayStation Plus currently offers three different subscription tiers, each offering a different level of content in addition to online multiplayer services. Prices range from $10.99 per month to $19.99 per month, making PS Plus a solid value and tempting competitor to Microsoft's Xbox Game Pass.
Sony is currently in hot water with PlayStation Plus subscribers after it was announced that the upcoming Halo: Campaign Evolved The PS5 release would require both players to have an active subscription to play co-op. While online co-op games usually require both players to have a PS Plus subscription, players struggle with this Halo: Campaign Evolved forces you to subscribe to two split screen profiles to play on the same PS5 console.
Despite this controversy and the recent increase in the price of PlayStation Plus, the service still manages to attract an increasing number of players every year. PlayStation reported 129 million monthly active users on the PlayStation Network in Q3 2025, showing this new push for more PS Plus subscribers from a market perspective. As of 2024, 38% of PS Plus subscribers are part of the Extra or Premium tiers, up from 30% in 2022, showing a clear upward trend with plenty of room for growth.
The PlayStation Plus free game lineup for June includes Grounded: Fully Yoked Edition, Nickelodeon: All-Star Brawl 2and Warhammer 40K: Darktide. These titles are available to all subscribers, but PS Plus Extra subscribers also have access to several new additions to the game catalog, including: Black desert, Blades of Fire, Farming Simulator 25, Final Fantasy 16, Kingdom Come: Deliverance, Life is Strange: Double Exposureand Sonic X Shadow Generations.
