Soulslike games that are better than Dark Souls

Whether you focus on the role it played in creating the broader soulslike genre, or the gameplay within it, the game has long been hailed as a true masterpiece that may still rank among the best in its field. However, despite all the hype, it still exists a handful of souls out there who manage to outshine italbeit by a small margin.

The main thing that made it possible to overcome these games Dark souls is their innovation and commitment to progress. By innovating on an already specific genre, you can introduce super cool mechanics, themes, and ideas, all while maintaining the vision of the original concept. Lies P

The pinnacle of soul popularity outside of software

• A distinct fighting style that offers a lot of new elements.

Lies P came out of nowhere and proved that FromSoftware weren't the only developers capable of creating a world-class soul. You play as Pinocchio himself in a much darker and grittier world dominated by giant machines, mutated creatures and plenty of tricks ready to pounce when the time is right.

The biggest strengths are the combat and the art direction. The former combines parrying and weapon crafting to give you a lot of control over how fights play out and the types of weapons you have access to in them. When I started playing, I couldn't put the game down because try as you might, it's impossible to find a single flaw in its design. In many ways, it feels like a logical progression for the genre and serves as a perfect example of how far we've come since then. Dark souls in terms of individual mechanics and overall game feel.

First Berserker: Khazan

Faster than ever before

• Incredible boss design from start to finish.

First Berserker: Khazan it walks the line between chaos and precision, forcing you to learn fast and play aggressively or fall short at the finish line. You play as the titular warrior on his quest for revenge, and as you progress through the story and the world, the barriers that stand between you and the truth only get bigger and worse.

In terms of gameplay, you have access to one of three types of weapons: greatswords, spears, and dual-wielding. Each offers a unique playstyle that you can use in specific encounters to gain the upper hand and combo your enemies into oblivion, using long chains of abilities to parry attacks while dishing out plenty of heavy ones. Linearity is a pain point for long-time fans of the similar soul, but if the exploration in Dark souls it turns out to be too daunting, then I highly recommend giving Khazan an attempt at a more efficient and intense game.

Black Myth: Wukong

Folklore brought to life

• An epic journey into an iconic story.

• Several different fighting styles for each approach.

Soulslikes have never shied away from grandeur and excess, but Black Myth: Wukong is perhaps the most extravagant ever produced. As the Monkey King, you find yourself in a far-from-fairytale mythological world filled to the brim with almost every fantasy creature and icon imaginable, from anthropomorphic dogs to towering gods, all of which serve as obstacles on your way back to greatness.

I think the main reason the game hits so hard is the combination of soul-like suspense and hack-and-slash intensity. There are times when the exploration and gameplay feel very similar to one another Dark soulswith a more methodical approach that makes every step forward rewarding. But then he turns the dial and pushes you to the limit, sending out dozens of attacks at once that can only be dodged with perfect reactions. The entire game is treated as an homage to folklore, even if you don't know the original Journey to the West story, it's still a must play.

Elden Ring

It doesn't get much better than this

• It brought the duel of souls to a much larger open world.

• Organic research that requires no leadership.

Elden Ring fundamentally changed the soulslike genre forever and cemented its place among the best games ever made. Souls are no longer confined to a condensed world, as we can now explore giant environments that are equal parts terrifying and exciting, all without any objective markers or explicit clues as to where to go next.

There are a few moments throughout the game that really blew me away because of the sheer spectacle of the game on screen. One minute you're battling a ruthless opponent to the death in a smaller arena, and the next you're galloping across the landscape towards a distant castle, guided not by a waypoint or a quest marker, but by a pure organic desire to see more and discover what the rest of The Lands Between has to offer.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

Dark souls absolutely nailed the atmosphere and world design in its time, but going back now the game feels a little rough, especially when compared to Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. No slow rolls or simple attack chains await here, just lightning-fast swings and hyper-aggressive enemies that overwhelm even the most seasoned soul-like veterans.

When I first played An axe I couldn't do much more than a few hours at launch, but when I came back to it months later, I realized I was watching the pinnacle of video game design mastery unfold before my eyes. Uncompromisingly tough and stunningly beautiful at the same time, if I had to choose one soul to play with for the rest of my life, then I choose An axe every time.
