The latest round of releases to mostly negative reviews amid fan outrage

Dead or Alive 6: Last Round, a re-release of the 2019 fighting game, was released last week. Crucially, the original version of the game has also been stripped from the storefronts – something that players never like.

After 405 reviews, the re-release dropped to a “Mostly Negative” rating on Steam, as players complain about incomplete features and blocking of content previously owned by players.

Two of the biggest missing features are crossplay and rollback. The first relates to the ability to play with people who own the game on other platforms, while the second is a feature that compensates for network code lag in online play.

“The least you can do is return the characters I already own, you did [Dead or Alive 5] on [Dead or Alive 5: Last Round]. They could have done the bare minimum with crossplay and rollback,” writes one reviewer on Steam.

Dead or Alive 6: Last Round is priced at $40 and includes five additional characters (Nyotengu, Phase 4, Momiji, Rachel, and Tamaki) that were not part of the original base game.

While most of the content is being ported over, Team Ninja has released a post revealing Mai Shiranui and Kula Diamond's characters (and their costumes) that cannot be ported over to Last Round. Instead, players will be charged $11 per character (up from $8, their price in the original game).

Both Mai and Kula are crossover characters from SNK's The King of Fighters series, which probably explains why they can't be ported into a technically new game.

Several new features, such as the photo mode, are particularly annoying for players, as they are redundant when expected features such as crossplay and rollback are missing.

“It's insulting. Tecmo just sees this as a franchise coomer and thinks they can get away with the bare minimum,” writes one passionate reviewer. “I love Dead or Alive, but there is no way it can be a moderately competent fighting game with this attitude. This review remains the same until they at least do something.”

Needless to say, there are a lot of disappointed fans who were expecting something fresher from the series that hasn't seen a new game since 2019.
