The Sands Of Time remake is being embraced by fans

After a long and arduous development process involving multiple studios, Ubisoft has finally decided to cancel Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake. While the project was already in development hell, the move came as part of a major restructuring of the studio, where other projects were canceled as well.

This obviously didn't go down well with fans of the series who thought the IP was finally back from the dead after The Lost Crown and Rogue Prince. Unfortunately, most believe that this cancellation marked the end of the series as a whole. However, it seems that some members of the community are not going to let it go and plan to develop the remake themselves.

As noted by GamesRadar, the Prince of Persia: Community Remake Project is an attempt by fans to recreate the remake they were robbed of. “The Prince of Persia community has come together to create their own project following the cancellation of the Sands of Time Remake,” the announcement reads. “This is not a traditional remake, but an extensive mod that aims to replace most of the 3D models with high quality assets and introduce global lighting through path tracking technology.”

As with most community projects like this, this is essentially a high-quality texture restoration mod that will be run by volunteers. As it is, there are no strict deadlines and the whole thing will be a huge passion project. There aren't many details yet, but the team is already looking for artists and programmers. There will be a website with more details, but for now you can join the Discord channel.

Community projects like this are pretty common for beloved video game series. The two biggest that come to mind are Skyblivion and Path to Menzoberranzan. The first is a project to recreate The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion in Skyrim, and the second is a project to recreate the titular Drow city and other locations from Baldur's Gate 2 using BG3 mod tools.
