James Gunn ushers in a new era for superhero franchises The DC Universe jumps headfirst into “Chapter One: God and Monsters”. Hoping to recapture the world-building magic of the MCU's first phase, the DCU is officially off the starting blocks Creation Commandos. Along with the accompanying cartoon Creation CommandosThere's already been a surprise appearance of the DCU's own unofficial mascot in the opening credits.
While there is some confusion as to which parts of the old DCEU will carry over into the new canon, Creation Commandos has already joined the Peacemaker and Suicide Squad. Gunn's adult animation also resurrected a discarded easter egg from the DCU's not-too-distant cousin. Just like Disney has Mickey Mouse and McDonald's has Ronald McDonald, it looks like Ultrabunny has cemented himself as the mascot of the DCU.

Despite the number of potential projects the new DCU could pursue in the first few years, James Gunn reckons they'll keep it to themselves.
Who is Ultrabunny?
Ultrabunny as a bunny with floppy ears holding a sign first appeared in 2022 Suicide Squad but has officially appeared in DCU canon thanks to a blink-and-you'll-miss-it nod Creation Commandos episode 2 on December 5 “The Tourmaline Necklace” detailed the past of Indira Varma's Bride and her tragic story with Eric Frankenstein (David Harbour). As the episode went through history and the Bride's numerous run-ins with Eric, a flashback to the 90s featured him wearing a black Ultrabunny t-shirt.
Gunn told BBC Radio 1 in 2021 how Ultrabunny started as a joke to put Rick Flag Jr. by Joel Kinnaman to Wile E. Coyote Comedy Shirt for Suicide Squad. Although Warner Bros. also owns Looney Tunes characters, Gunn says the studio was concerned about splattering the iconic cartoon character with blood. Additionally, he said he felt a little “weird”, including the character:
“If it was Mickey Mouse, it would be fine, or if it was Wile E. and we were doing a Disney movie, I'd be fine, but doing a Warner Bros. movie. I felt a little weird with Wile E. Plus, I'm working on a Wile E. movie, so it's like all these different things came together and I just wasn't sure about it.”
Instead, Gunn created Ultrabunny and has been sharing his original artwork ever since (see above). Since Ultrabunny works as a stand-in for Wile E. Coyote, fans may notice some similarities, such as the pair holding funny signs. For the original artwork, Gunn pondered statements such as “the future is plaid” and “Elvis saves” before deciding “Obstacles are opportunities.”
Similar to Invincible comics have Science Dog and the Amazon animated series had Seance Dog (rights issues at fault), Ultrabunny is a fictional character that exists in the DCU universe as The Itchy & Scratchy Show in The Simpsons. Gunn promoted the importance of Ultrabunny, posting on Threads and telling fans:
Ultrabunny is one of the most famous cartoon characters in the DCU universe. He also appeared in Peacemaker.
The fact that Gunn said “one of the most famous” suggests that there are other cartoon characters. Has Gunn designed his own superhero team of anthropomorphic animals yet? At least the audience knows Superman, and the rest would love to kick back with a weird cartoon after a hard day of saving the world.
Observant viewers have noticed how Eric Frankenstein Ultrabunny's T-shirt differs from the one worn by Rick Flag Jr. Suicide Squad. That's when Flag changed into a yellow t-shirt with Ultrabunny holding a sign that said “obstáculos son opportunidades”. (This is Spanish for “obstacles are opportunities”.) The character made an unexpected return when Evan Calcaterra (Lenny Jacobson) wore an Ultrabunny T-shirt A peacemaker season 1, while there is an Ultrabunny action figure on the hood of Vigilante's (Freddie Strom) car. Ultrabunny appears in Creation Commandos further links the DCU canon.

James Gunn gives the best explanation yet of how Suicide Squad and Peacemaker are DCU Canon
Suicide Squad and Peacemaker are “mostly” canon for the DCU reboot, and James Gunn has offered a new explanation for how it works.
The DCU already has its own mascot
Ultrabunny is something of an enigma, his name and outfit implying that he has at least some sort of superpower. There's also a gag for which his tagline was the production catchphrase Suicide Squad. Whether or not Gunn has even given him a backstory remains to be seen, but with fans seemingly responding well to his inclusion, Ultrabunny has the potential to become his own DCU character. It also sounds like a great opportunity for merchandising – just look at how popular it is The MandalorianGrogu became.
“Chapter One: Gods and Monsters” is expected to be the first installment of the ever-expanding DCU, adding some of the weird and wonderful characters that the DCEU has never included, as well as some brand new creations. Creation Commandos wasted no time nodding to the wider world, with David Corenswet's Superman tipped to at least mention him before the end credits. Due to Ultrabunny's popularity, it is expected that he will appear in the fashion of many other characters, but what if he is destined for more?
In addition to the already packed chapter one, Ultrabunny was able to appear in his own project. While a full-fledged Ultrabunny movie seems unlikely after Warner Bros. canceled by Wile E. Coyote Coyote vs. Acme after it was completed, Gunn's mention of its popularity suggests he has a plan. Also, if Gunn can pull this off and pitch Warner Bros. the right project, an Ultrabunny trip could fill a coyote-shaped hole. If not, series in spirit Creation Commandos could also work.
There are likely a lot more important characters to worry about, like the cast of Batman for God and Monsters, as well as the hopeful arrivals of fan favorites like Booster Gold, Martian Manhunter, and Wonder Woman further down the line. While Ultrabunny is never more than a funny drawing Gunn made because he couldn't use Wile E. Coyote, he could become a recurring Easter egg like Pixar's iconic Pizza Planet trucks. Still, imagine what Gunn could do with his own nasty take on the Justice League's animal tribute.
