Key things
- While Dawn's PS5 remake is heating up on social media, some are claiming it looks “much worse” than the original game.
- In the comments section of the comparison video, fans complained about the remake removing the atmosphere of the original and heavily criticized the game's lighting.
- Reports of bugs, crashes, and technical issues make the $60 remake unappealing and worse than the original.
Until Dawn, along with Horizon Zero Dawn, will probably go down as the two modern titles that didn't need remakes/remasters in any way, shape, or form. Their original versions were perfectly playable on the PS5, both are less than ten years old and absolutely fine to look at. The only thing these remasters really offer is improved performance and improved visuals, but in the case of Until Dawn, it doesn't look like this new remaster offers even that.
Over the past few days, with fans and content creators getting their hands on the title a little early, there's been a lot of criticism on social media about the PS5 version of Until Dawn looking “much worse” than the original. For example, check out the comments section of a recent comparison video by YouTuber ElAnalistaDeBits.
A lot of comments will immediately focus on the PS5 version's lighting, which seems much brighter and less moody and dark than the original. We can see some pretty drastic examples right at the beginning of the video, as the comparisons honestly look like they were taken at different times of the day. You can find a number of humorous comments about the lighting change calling the game “Already Dawn” and “After Dawn”.
There are also complaints about the general changes to the game's atmosphere, which are not helped by this lighting change. One user claims that developer Ballistic Moon “completely ruined the atmosphere” of the game, while another says that the PS5 version of Until Dawn looks “much worse” than the original.
Until Dawn reportedly runs worse on PS5 as well
You could probably forgive some dodgy art direction if the game ran better than the original, but there are clearly some issues there as well. First reported by ShirrakoGaming, the PS5 version of Until Dawn appears to be more buggy than the original and also crashes more often.
Shirrako is not the only one who has experienced this. Now that the game has launched, user reviews of the title on Steam have been flooded, dropping to Mixed at the time of writing. From the negative reviews, we can see that several players are experiencing crashes, stuttering, screen tearing and other technical issues, with several reviews complaining about the dreaded PSN requirements.
Right now, it doesn't seem like there's much appeal to try Until Dawn on PS5 right now, without the game's mandatory $60 price tag. Unlike Horizon Zero Dawn, Until Dawn doesn't have a $10 upgrade option, which means you're paying full price for a pretty crappy remake that runs and looks worse than the original. Yeah, I'll pass that one on.
