Rumors have been circulating for weeks that Kingdom Come: Deliverance developer Warhorse Studios is working on a new Lord of the Rings game. Those rumors have proven to be true as Warhorse has now officially announced that they are working on a LOTR RPG as well as a third game in the Kingdom Come series.
Warhorse confirmed the news this morning, posting a double announcement on social media. “You may have heard the rumours, it's time to reveal what we're working on,” reads the post, confirming that the Czech developer is indeed working on what are likely to be two mammoth projects at the same time.
The announcement doesn't actually mention The Lord of the Rings by name, which is an interesting detail. He simply refers to his unnamed project set in Tolkien's world as an “open-ended Middle-earth RPG”. However, he used the LOTR hashtag. It also hasn't given its sequel Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 a name, which could mean it's not just Kingdom Come: Deliverance 3.
The news that Warhorse is preparing something that will take players back to Middle-earth comes less than a week after Amazon revealed that its Lord of the Rings MMO had been cancelled. The two probably aren't related, since since the rumors have now been confirmed, it seems like whatever Warhorse is working on has been brewing for a while, though it's almost certainly still a few years away.
