Huge creatures lie in the depths, but which one is the biggest?

Clam Leviathan – Subnautica 2 Location Overview

  • Great Jaw Clam Leviathan is located in Tufa towers region, in the southwest corner of Proteus. It's about 350 meters southwest of the Lifepod.

  • You can use Wander Blackbox as a guide. Once you reach the pit where Wander is, head south into the depths.

  • While you don't technically need them to reach the Big Jaw, having a high capacity air tank and a Tadpole vehicle will make it much easier to reach and traverse the area around the Clam Leviathan.

  • The center of the Great Jaw contains lithium deposits that must be broken up with a sonic resonator before you can collect them. You'll also find two portable oxygen dispenser fragments here, which unlock the map when scanned.

  • Watch out for the purple string in the center of the case. When you trip, it causes the Great Jaw to close around you.

Start from Lifepod:

To reach the Big Jaw, the best place to start is where your journey began, the Lifepod. Here's a quick list of things I found useful when I set out on Clam Leviathan:

Item

Use

High capacity air tank

This upgrade to the standard air tank increases the total oxygen delivery to 120 seconds, which almost doubles the 75 second oxygen time of the standard air tank. It goes without saying that there should be an increased supply of oxygen inside Subnautica 2 is important. The blue print can be found in the ruins northeast of Big Jaw. The data card can be found on the left immediately after entering the wreck. You will need Lithium x1 and Titanium x2 to craft the required Plasteel Ingot in the processor.

Tadpole

While not necessary, building a Tadpole small vehicle will allow you to quickly reach the depths of the Tufa Towers area. It's more a matter of convenience, because without it you will certainly achieve the goal, but it is much easier.

Air bladder

For players who choose to go without the Tadpole, be sure to take the Air Bladder. This will help you surface quickly if you run into trouble.

Materials for lighthouses

Once you reach the Big Jaw, you can create a beacon to mark the location – if you've unlocked the blueprint. There are several Beacons to scan in the ruins north of the Big Jaw. You can then use the Habitat Builder to create a lighthouse anywhere. Requires Titanium x1 and Copper x1.

Don't forget to set the Lifepod – or a nearby Habitat you've built – as a place to print your new body if you die. You don't want to end up at the opposite end of the map in a Biobed you forgot to build earlier in the game.

Head to the Wander Blackbox:

If you haven't visited the region yet, the best way to get in the general direction is to use the Wander Blackbox signal. You can do this in the “Signals” tab in the main menu.

Once you have the “Wander” signal active, head southwest along the edge of the reef that separates the shallow part of the seabed from the deeper area to the south. You can track this reef directly on Wander.

Head south to the Great Jaw Clam Leviathan:

When you reach the large spider-shaped coral that covers the pit where the Wander Blackbox is, you can turn south and head over the reef into the depths. You should see a large piece of debris not too far ahead.

This wreck is where High capacity air tank the plan is located right at the entrance on the data card.

As you move around the wreck, you'll see a massive Leviathan Great Jaw Clam appear. You'll notice that there's an oxygen tunic right at the edge of the cliff, allowing you to take in plenty of air before heading to the center.

Be careful! If you go below 100m, you lose oxygen efficiency, meaning you run out of air much faster. This is especially dangerous when you're aiming for the center of the Big Jaw and targeting the purple trip wires. Don't be like me who choked three times in a row because I was so focused on trying to avoid the jaws of death.

Great Jaw Leviathan Clam Rewards:

If you make it to the center of the Big Jaw, there are two key rewards waiting for you:

  • Lithium: This incredibly rare resource can be found inside the central module. You must craft and use a Sonic Resonator to break and collect deposits.
  • Portable Oxygen Dispenser Design: This incredibly useful device can be created once you scan the two located in the middle. One sits just outside the central module and the other is inside the module, under a piece of Metal Salvage.

Q: Will the Sonic Resonator cause tripping wires to snap?

Answer: Yes and no. I was able to charge and shoot the Sonic Resonator through the purple thread. However, the recoil can push you back over the tripwire, so make sure you pay attention to what's behind you inside the module.
