The article contains spoilers from One pieceFinal Saga.
One pieceStraw hats not only are they the heart and soul of the story, but they may also be the most popular group in manga and anime history. Eiichiro Oda's shonen masterpiece has been around for over two decades, and Luffy and his nakama have traveled all the way from East Blue to the New World and beyond. They were in the sky and deep under the water. They have toppled giants, overthrown dictators, defied corrupt government and fought wars. They laughed, cried, celebrated and mourned. While the group expanded and several members left temporarily, the Straw Hats ultimately stayed together One piecebasis.
One Piece: Eiichiro Oda finally reveals the strongest level of Haki
The strongest level of haki has been revealed and has the power to counter even immortality in One Piece.
Luffy might be a captain, but his crew made him get as far as he could. Conversely, the rest of the Straw Hats wouldn't be where they are without Luffy and each other. They are as close as a family and as a whole can face all kinds of challenges. The crew has stared down the Grim Reapers several times, but has yet to face the unthinkable: the death of a (human) Straw Hat. Fans have speculated about this for a long time death of the straw hatbut could it happen in Final Saga? Let's discuss it.
How rumors of the Straw Hat's death began to spread
-
Some fans say the straw hat would die
-
Oda never claimed anything like that.
When we talk about the death of the straw hat going forward, there are two distinct scenarios to keep in mind. The first scenario is that fans are simply arguing that the Straw Hat should die in the Final Saga. This is perfectly fine if only because it is based on the personal opinion of the readers. One piece it's about presenting your own ideas and theorizing together as a group. If someone believes that the straw hat can die in the Final Saga, and can even provide their reasoning, then there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.
However, the vast majority of ideas about the death of the straw hat come from misinformation, and it all goes back about two decades. By the time Oda was still struggling with the Skypiea arc, he had already decided to kill off the main characters. Around this time, Oda is believed to have said that he was planning a great death for the Straw Hat Pirates. This statement has been misinterpreted by many people over the years. Oda never actually said that he wanted to kill the Straw Hat or that the Straw Hat would die going forward. Oda spoke only about Veselý's deathwho, as fans know, is also part of the family.
In fact, Oda has previously stated that Merry's death was necessary to make the story flow better. At first, Oda didn't want to kill Merry, but seeing the extent of things moving forward in the Great Line, he felt it was necessary.
At first I had no intention of letting the Straw Hats leave the Going Merry, but decided to do so as the enemy ships were getting stronger. – Ode, 2013
But there is absolutely no truth to the idea that Oda wants to kill the Straw Hat in the future One piece. One member of the family has already died, and fans know her as the Merry, the beloved ship of the Straw Hat pirates.
Will the straw hat die in one piece?
Death of a straw hat is highly unlikely
Now that it's clear that Oda has no intention of killing the Straw Hat, fans can now move on to the next topic of whether the Straw Hat can die One piece or not. Simply put, Oda is almost certainly not going to kill any member of the Straw Hat Pirates in the Final Saga of One piece.
This is due to the fact that each Straw Hat member has their own hopes and dreams.
-
Luffy wants to become a pirate king and his real dream is not even to become a pirate king.
-
Zoro wants to become the greatest swordsman in the world.
-
Nami wants to draw a map of the whole world.
-
Usopp wants to become a brave warrior of the sea.
-
Sanji wants to find All Blue.
-
Chopper wants to become a doctor who can cure all diseases.
-
Robin wants to find the real history of the world.
-
Franky wants to sail across the world's oceans on his dream ship.
-
Brook wants to reunite with Laboon.
-
Finally, Jinbe is here to make Luffy the Pirate King, and his ultimate dream is to see the Fishman species flourish, which he believes is only possible with Luffy.
One Piece: Oda reveals his plans for One Piece's ending
Oda has already planned the end of the series. The end of One Piece is going to be huge.
It is clear that all the members of the Straw Hat Pirates have dreams and they must be fulfilled. Of course, all of them can only be fulfilled at the end One piecemeaning that no character will die and leave their dreams unfulfilled.
Now, fans would argue that the character may die after fulfilling his dream. But Oda has already refuted that again, although not directly. Simply put, Ora stated that he hates killing off characters because it limits what he can do and he wants to do a lot with the story. By that Oda was referring to the characters in the story in general and it would be even more difficult for him to kill the straw hat because it would basically destroy everything Luffy fought and trained for and that's basically impossible.
Why Oda hates killing characters
Oda Wants to Draw Big Parties
Oda's reasoning for not wanting to kill characters is quite reasonable. Simply put, he loves One piece enough to have a mix of dark themes but also a message for an optimistic future. Oda wants to end his arcs with big banquets and parties.
“The reason I don't want to draw scenes where people die is because I want to draw a party after a battle. When someone dies, you can't have a nice party. A party is my ideal form of friendship. I want to end One Piece with a big party.” – Ode
If everyone just died every now and then, Oda wouldn't be able to draw these massive parties and One piece it would become a grim series with a very grim message. This is the exact opposite of what Oda wants to do with One piece. In fact, Oda even made it clear that he wanted to end One Piece with a big party. This is a clear confirmation from Oda that no Straw Hats will die, because if they do, there is absolutely no way Luffy will continue to celebrate. Luffy is done with losing people close to him, as he's made clear, and the whole idea of the Straw Hat dying, while interesting, just doesn't happen.
One Piece is available to read through Viz Media. Fans can officially read the series for free on the Shonen Jump and Manga Plus apps. The release date for the next One Piece chapter, One Piece 1167, is set for December 1, 2025.
