Team Fortress 2 seems to be ported to source 2

Half-Life 3 is the only thing Valve fans are really interested in at the moment, with various insiders constantly teasing a potential announcement that could happen at any moment. No seriously, tomorrow is definitely the day guys. This time for sure.

Despite the Half-Life 3 fever going around at the moment, it's worth noting that there are other Valve games out there, one of which is Team Fortress 2. Over the past year, there have been rumors of Valve potentially switching to the series at some point, sparked by a mysterious 'TF' codename found in data mines for other Valve games, such as Deadlock-Strike 2 Counter.

While I personally hope this is a sign that Valve has secretly purchased EA's Titanfall and is preparing a third game, this codename almost certainly refers to Team Fortress, and earlier this year it was revealed by dataminers that 'TF' received a new feature that overhauled the decal system and that it was pushed into the base engine of Source 2. In English, whether it's basically something new related to the team, Valve's technical demo.

Team Fortress 2 seems to be ported to source 2

However, a new discovery by dataminers seems to indicate that Valve may be trying to port all of Team Fortress 2 to the Source 2 engine. A Counter-Strike 2 datamin first shared by Valve YouTuber Tyler McVicker revealed that Valve updated the Source 1 import to give it the ability to import the func_respawnroomvisualizer entity (a fancy red wall that prevents enemies from entering your spawn room, specifically in Team Fortress 2), as well as “improving the distribution of maps between prefabs”.

This means two things. First, it pretty much confirms that TF is in fact a reference to Team Fortress as expected, but it also seems like Valve is porting Team Fortress 2 maps to Source 2.

“This is effectively a direct confirmation that yes, there is a team at Valve working on porting Team Fortress 2 to Source 2 for some reason.”

This is a pretty exciting discovery, but the question still remains as to why exactly Valve is doing this. McVicker speculates that it could be anything from a remaster of Team Fortress 2 to a brand new game. However, due to how long Valve has been tinkering with this 'TF' project, McVicker believes we can safely rule out this game being a tech demo, as Valve's previous tech demos have been released in a much shorter time frame.

Finally, McVicker has a more sober reminder that given how little time this mysterious 'TF' project has been in production, it's very possible that Valve just decided to shelve the whole thing and not bother with it. Nothing is guaranteed at this point, most of the information we have at this point is speculative. However, it's a sign that Valve is still working on something Team Fortress-related right now, so we're crossing our fingers that we'll actually see what this thing is all about.
