Doom co-creator John Romero reveals his canceled game is alive and well

In July, as Microsoft went on a rampage of canceling projects and closing studios, John Romero's Romero Games revealed that they had lost funding for the shooter he was working on. While the studio thankfully didn't start, Romero revealed that they had to take a step back and evaluate their next steps.

Now, five months later, Romero revealed that the project is alive and the team is back at work to complete it. He also said that the game has changed a lot since Microsoft pulled the funding, but the trade-off is that the developers could do exactly what they wanted and the current version is more fun.

Speaking at the Salón del Videojuego de Madrid (thanks, Eurogamer), Romero said the game has been saved and revealed a few details. “There's a really good 110 people working on the game,” and it's been “basically a complete overhaul.” While much was removed from the previous version of the game, it “includes many elements” from the original vision.

“We are not starting from scratch,” he added. “We can take pieces out and put them into a brand new indie game. We have a lot of things we can put into the game. The design is completely different, but the team is very excited about the new design.”

Interview: Doom Co-Creator John Romero Says 'Hell Yes' to Female Doom Slayer

We recently spoke with John Romero to talk about modern shooters, his own projects, and his thoughts on a female Doomslayer.

While the studio's new version of the game is much smaller, Romero said it's “more fun” for the developers to work on because “the people working on it are all directors from different departments and they didn't really get to code or design or whatever to do it themselves, but now we have to.”

“[We get to] doing the thing we're really good at by ourselves. And that's why small teams are great,” he added. As for the game, he said it's unlike any game he's ever played and will still be a shooter. “But the things you do in it will be new to people, the way you go through the Elden Ring was a really new experience,” he said.

“It was a very crazy place and a different world and it was really cool to explore it and go 'what is this?'” added Romero. “That's the idea behind what we do in this game.
