Hollow Knight: Silksong has only been out for a few months, but fans have already lapped up pretty much everything there is to experience in the Hornet's latest adventure. Understandably, this left many wanting more, and ever since one of the game's sound designers explained that they were still working on the title despite its release, the expansion itch has well and truly begun.
We know that Team Cherry likes to pile on expansions at the top of the game, as the first Hollow Knight got four before moving on to Silksong. Hidden Dreams, The Grimm Troupe, Lifeblood, and Godmaster were all free updates that added a lot to the original Hollow Knight, and it was pretty likely that Silksong would get the same treatment. In fact, we now actually know when the first one comes.
The Hollow Knight: Silksong Sea Of Sorrow expansion will launch next year
In the late afternoon, Team Cherry decided to drop a bombshell out of the blue, revealing that the first expansion for Hollow Knight: Silksong will launch next year. In a year-end blog post on the Team Cherry website, the studio revealed that the title of the expansion is Seas of Sorrow and that it will launch sometime in 2026, with no specific date or month.
Every silk skill in Silksong, ranked from least to most useful
Hornet silk skills are essential to surviving the winding paths of Pharloom without hundreds of dead in your rescue file.
To make it even better, it's also been announced that the Sea of Sorrow expansion will be free for all players, as Team Cherry continues their trend of being disturbingly generous in an age where we're expected to be nickel and dime at every turn.
As the name suggests, Team Cherry explained that this expansion is nautical themed and will add new areas, tools and bosses to the game. The studio is tight-lipped on details for now, but mentions that they will share more information shortly before the expansion's release next year.
In addition, Team Cherry also took this opportunity to announce that the original Hollow Knight will be getting a Nintendo Switch 2 edition, which will also be released sometime in 2026. Just like the Sea of Sorrow expansion for Silksong, those who own Hollow Knight on the original Nintendo Switch will be able to download the Nintendo Switch 2 version for free.
