Blastoise
- Most useful against: Brock, Blaine
Squirtle is the middle variant among starters Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen. Not as overwhelming as Bulbasaur in the early game, but not as weak as Charmander either. Unfortunately, Blastoise is weaker than both Charizard and Venusaur when fully evolved, mainly because its stat distribution is all over the place.
This means that water-type Pokemon have some of the most powerful moves available to them FRLGsuch as Surf, Hydro Cannon and Hydro Pump. Additionally, Blastoise's superior defense makes it very difficult to take off the field easily, ensuring that the Pokémon almost always has a chance to get several moves before passing out.
Nidoking
- Most useful against: Lieutenant Surge, Koga, Blaine, Bruno
Nidoking is the undisputed king of the early game Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreenmainly because of how soon it will come online if you level up Nidorino soon and get the Moonstone from Mt. Nidoking's strength lies in his cover moves. From Earthquake to Brick Break, he'll learn some incredible moves from Technical Machines.
Nidoking mostly wants to learn Physical moves that taper off from Attack, but at times he can also learn moves like Flamethrower, Shock Wave, and Blizzard if you're missing a type at a crucial moment.
Dodrio
- Most useful against: Erika, Blue
Dodrio is an often overlooked Flying-type Pokémon due to its undemanding nature, which leads it to be underrated. However, not only does he have an excellent stat spread that surpasses both Pidgeot and Fearow, he also gains access to the best Flying-type move in the game: Drill Peck.
Additionally, Dodrio offers great utility with access to Tri Attack, which can often cause a status effect, and Body Slam, which is ideal for paralyzing targets.
Jolteon
- Most useful against: Lorelei, Lance, Blue
Gift Eevee from Celadon City offers players three options. Vaporeon is out of the picture since Blastoise already fills the water mover role for the team and Flareon isn't really an option either since FRLGThe physical/specialty writing divide works against this.
Jolteon is the only real choice here, which is great because it's one of the strongest non-legendary Electric types available in the Kanto region.
Snorlax
- Most useful against: Agatha, Blue, Sabrina
Snorlax is a team dedicated tank with monstrous base stats, incredible size and devastating attack. Because Shadow Ball is considered a physical move Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreenSnorlax is one of the best users of this move in the game, despite its lack of STAB. Combined with Rest and Sleep Talk, this means that Snorlax can sustain endlessly while dealing insane damage.
If you prefer your Snorlax to take a more active role instead, you can replace Rest and Sleep Talk with Yawn and Double-Edge or Rest and Belly Drum if you plan to use it as a dedicated sweeper.
Arcanine/Ninetales
- Most useful against: Erika, Agatha, Blue
If you play Pokemon FireRedyou'll find Growlithe on routes 7 and 8 as an exclusive version, while v Pokemon LeafGreenVulpix takes that slot instead. Both are excellent fire-type Pokemon that complement the team nicely, although Arcanine is preferred because it has access to STAB Extreme Speed, one of the most powerful moves in the entire game.
