Forget Pickle, Borderlands 4's Mad Ellie DLC brings back one of the series' oldest characters

The Border the franchise has no shortage of memorable characters, and many hope their favorites will eventually return Borderlands 4DLC content. The Mad Ellie and Vault of the Damned expansions seem to get the ball rolling in this regard, as in addition to the return of Moxxi's vehicle-loving daughter, Mancubus Bloodtooth returns. A fan-favorite chat host who appeared in Borderlands 3The excellent DLC Guns, Love, and Tentacles has won over many for its goofy voice and strange mannerisms, and is perfectly suited for another horror-focused experience. Ellie and Mancubus aren't alone though, as the controversial character (and niche but memorable character) has also been confirmed for DLC: Pickle and Crazy Earl.

Cucumber is… interesting Border character at least. After appearing only in Borderlands: The Pre-Sequelthis 10-year-old Australian was the definition of a love-him-or-hate-him character. Some found him unfunny, annoying and grating, looking at him as a failed attempt to recapture the success of the now iconic Tina Tina. Others saw him as a charming addition who wanted him to age as the series progressed. While Lilith “firehawking” Elpis thought a lot about the character's fate, regardless of which camp they fell into, they now know that he is alive and well. He will feature prominently in it Borderlands 4Mad Ellie's story missions, and while it remains to be seen if Gearbox can win over its detractors with new content, the studio will likely have an easier time with the returning character Crazy Earl.

Who is Crazy Earl from Borderlands?

Voiced by none other than Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford, Crazy Earl was the seller or seeker in every Border game before Borderlands 4. As his name suggests, he is unhinged and screams regularly Zelda references, a note about his rotting fingers, or a mention of his lonely fear of cotton wool. He also apparently resorted to cannibalism in the past. Players can only see Earl's head in it Border franchise as he punches through a hole in the metal doors he hides behind in locations from Elpis to Sanctuary. He took on the following roles in the games:

  • Border: Quest-giver for main and side quests.
  • Borderlands 2: Vendor, trading Eridium for sales and banking slots.
  • Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel: Vendor, trading Eridium for sales and banking slots.
  • Borderlands 3: Vendor, trading Eridium for currency.
  • Borderlands 4: ???

Crazy Earl is a memorable and special NPC that hardcore fans will remember well, though casual players will likely forget about him. After all, he never appeared in a cutscene, only affecting the main plot of the original Border game. Still, there's a chance that Vault of the Damned will give him his biggest role yet, as the animation quality for the close-up of his eye (about 20 seconds into the trailer) is quite high. This suggests that he could appear in the cinema or splash screen, which would certainly be fun to see.

What could Crazy Earl's role be in Borderlands 4's Vault of the Damned expansion?

There are a few ways Gearbox could go with Crazy Earl in this upcoming expansion. The first would bring it full circle and he somehow affected the main story. Perhaps he could be revealed as some otherworldly creature, explaining why he's been hiding behind the door for so long and why he's coming back in a spooky expansion. The other (and more likely) option is to make Crazy Earl the seller he has been for over a decade. In addition to new pearl gear and legendary weapons for players to pursue in the DLC, there will be 28 cosmetics available, ranging from heads and skins to cloaks and ECHO-4 items. Maybe Crazy Early could trade this cosmetic loot for Eridium just like him Borderlands 3which would give Eridium another purpose in BL4something it desperately needs since players usually have more than they need for the flipping and boss reruns it's currently used for. Regardless of how Earl is used, seeing him again in this expansion will certainly provide a nice little burst of nostalgia.
