Starfield reveals more details about the Free Lanes update

Star field has revealed new details and footage for a slew of new features coming in the Free Lanes update, which will hit the space exploration action RPG on April 7. Free Lanes will bring a lot of new elements to the game. Star field which players have been demanding since its initial release in September 2023, and they won't have to wait long to dive into the new content.

Free Lanes update for Star field was announced on March 17, along with news of a paid Terran Armada story expansion. While the Terran Armada will focus on a powerful new robotic threat and be filled with extensive missions, Free Lanes will also add several new points of interest to the planetary maps, along with a number of features that will make life aboard starships more natural and realistic.

Just days before the update launches, the Bethesda team has given players a glimpse into Free Lanes via a new trailer that gives a deeper look at how many of its features will be implemented. One of the most requested features that players have had is the ability to freely travel through space, as many have discovered Star fieldThe rapid motion system of gravitationally hopping between planets is less engaging than high speed flight between different solar systems. New footage from Free Lanes shows what many players first hoped to see, as the new Cruise mode sees a ship zooming past several planets at the speed of light. Players will also be able to engage an autopilot mode that allows them to plot a course to specific points in the galaxy while spending time freely moving around their ships, and their journeys can be interrupted by interdictions, combat events that interrupt travel and force players into defensive battles against enemy ships.

In addition to changes to Star fieldPlanetary travel will also give players a lot more to do on ships and bases. The ship optimization terminal will give players more detailed ways to adjust and maximize energy flow to the ship's weapons, shields, engines, and gravity drives, and will arrive alongside a number of new ship upgrades. Additionally, Free Lanes will add several improvements to bases, including the ability to more easily distribute resources through shared containers, and will add a special orbital mansion in the form of Asteroid Manor.

Players should also expect upgrades to their handgun collection Star fieldas they are about to gain access to X-Tech, an in-game resource that will allow players to re-roll legendary equipment effects and upgrade not only their equipment, but also ship systems, beyond their current capabilities. Although not confirmed for Free Lanes, a collection of unique companions will be added Star field through the Terran Armada, giving players more options when choosing a crew to sail the galaxy with or staff for their planetary bases. One character in particular now appears to have leaked via the new Free Lanes trailer, though it remains to be seen if he'll be recruitable without the Terran Armada. In addition, players will be able to adopt a pet in the form of the Mini Whale, an adorable palm-sized eight-legged alien creature that can be seen wriggling around on the floor begging for attention.
