The Zelda movie has completed filming ahead of a 2027 release

The Legend of Zelda movie has ended filming. The film is now set to release on May 7, 2027.

This was confirmed at CinemaCon last night (thanks, IGN) and suggests that everything is according to plan. Filming took place in New Zealand and principal photography began in November last year. The Zelda and Link actors are the only confirmed cast members at this time.

Zelda has wrapped filming but won't premiere until next May

Link and Princess Zelda in The Legend of Zelda Movie.

Perhaps the most impressive thing about all of this is not that the shoot has more than a year to spare, but that it all happened with minimal leaks. From what we can tell, much of the film is being shot on location, and despite that, we only seem to have one instance of unauthorized footage leaking from the set, which really isn't bad considering all the interest in the project.

We got a brief look at Link, Zelda, and possibly Imp in the leaks, so that barely gave us any spoilers. Some speculate that Imp is played by actor Dichen Lachman, but this has not been confirmed.

As for the rest of the case, Zelda is played by Bo Bragason and Link is played by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth. We don't know much at all about how these characters will be portrayed as there are many different iterations of the characters to draw from, but right now most signs point to something more Breath of the Wild / Tears of the Kingdom inspired.

In any case, with filming wrapped up, hopefully we'll get a trailer before the end of the year. Following the success of the Super Mario Bros. movies Movie and Super Mario Galaxy Movie are all eyes on this Zelda adaptation – and given the games more serious tone, there's a lot more that could go wrong here. Heck, we don't even know if the movie will have Link speaka decision that will prove controversial no matter which route you take.

The Legend of Zelda movie is set to open on May 7, 2027. It comes as part of a busy window for gaming fans, with Sonic 4 hitting theaters on March 19, followed by the second Minecraft movie on July 23.
