A patch for Street Fighter 6 makes Alex's marriage to his half-sister a little less weird

Last month, the beloved character Alex was added to Street Fighter 6 along with a related World Tour storyline where we learned more about the professional wrestler's background and personal life. The details were… surprising to say the least.

To catch up with you: Alex is an orphaned child taken in by his late father's friend and trainer, Tom. After Alex's parents die, Tom essentially becomes his adoptive father. That's all, but then Tom and his wife have a daughter, Patricia. Alex and Patricia grew up together, making them more or less half-siblings. Later in life, the pair marry.

Cousin-sister-wife

It's already a dubious premise since the pair are basically brother and sister, but then a one-liner reveals that Tom was Alex's mother's cousin, meaning they're also biologically related. The couple then give birth to their own offspring, completing the circle in Habsburg style.

Some believe that Tom is related to Alex's mother, as it is not customary in Japan for people who are not biologically related to an orphan to adopt them. This can be seen in the popular movie Suzume, where the eponymous character is adopted by her aunt after her mother's death.

Capcom then apologized for the plot and promised to tweak the dialogues in some languages. Well, that patch arrived and it didn't really make the plot any less weird. According to Capcom, “some of Alex's World Tour story text has been modified in certain languages.”

Instead of explicitly saying that Tom is his mother's cousin, Alex instead says:[Tom] he's a distant relative of my mother's or something.” So… the biological connection between Alex and Patricia is now more questionable, which is a plus… I guess? Capcom could have completely changed the plot and no one would have batted an eye, but it seems like the studio is set on keeping some kind of biological connection between Tom and Alex's mother.

So, unfortunately for Alex fans, she will remain in her loving relationship with her cousin-sister in the canon of the series. At the very least, Alex isn't appearing in the upcoming Street Fighter movie, so we won't have to deal with this issue in theaters…yet.
