It's no big secret that shooters are extremely popular, but the genre has been around since its inception Halo and Medal of Honor. This is especially true in the competitive scene where games are liked ARC Raiderswhich is much more focused on discovery, exploration and stealth, it manages to wipe the floor with traditional shooters like Call of Duty. That's a good thing: while I personally don't enjoy extraction shooters as much as traditional ones, the greater variety and experimentation within an online shooter makes for an exciting and richer gameplay experience overall.
At the same time, Sagittarius are more fickle than ever. With a live services model, it's not enough for these kinds of games to launch with a solid set of features and content; it must maintain and continue to maintain the attention of its audience. Perhaps that's why, despite their huge initial success, both ARC Raiders and Battlefield 6 have seen a large decline in player numbers as more transient members of their player base move on to other games. One such game is War in the gray zoneshooter that, despite still being in early access, has drawn a number of comparisons to the aforementioned titles, as well as Marathon and Escape from Tarkov. These comparisons were generally favorable to War in the gray zonewhich threatens to grow into a massive hit.
Marathon vs. ARC Raiders on Steam Player Count
Marathon is now here to bring ARC Raiders its first major competitor, and that's how each game builds its Steam player count.
What is Gray Zone Warfare, a fast-paced shooter that's flooding steam?
War in the gray zone is set on a “Southeast Asian island” torn by civil war, but there's a bit more to it than that. Gray zoneDeveloper MADFINGER Games has been transparent about the game it's inspired by Roadside picnicthe same seminal sci-fi novel that inspired people like Subway 2033 and STALKER games. This adds an undeniable element of mystery Gray zone's world, because there's always a deeper, more disturbing story underlying its seemingly traditional military sims.
AND War in the gray zone it definitely leans on its military roots and places a strong emphasis on tactics, foresight, strategy and teamwork. Gunfights are complex and difficult, healing is realistic and split, and damage can result in permanent, noticeable changes, such as a cavity left on a character model after being shot. These creative choices associated with War in the gray zone's vivid graphics have drawn comparisons Escape from Tarkovalthough he seems to have escaped much of the criticism leveled against him Tarkovsuch as poor optimization and error rate.
Gray Zone Warfare's PvE options
One of the biggest complaints against ARC Raiders it has to do with its lack of PvE capabilities. Of course, this isn't a flaw of the game in the strictest sense, as developers Embark Studios have made it clear that this is intentional: ARC Raiders it's supposed to be competitive, and “forced” PvP was seen as a necessary part of that formula. But still, not every player appreciates the stress and pressure that comes with PvP in an extraction shooter, where one well-placed shot from a more experienced player half a mile away can destroy your last thirty minutes of progress.

War in the gray zone it has PvP and PvPvE, but also the option of PvE only, solo or with a team. This relatively small option has a significant impact on Gray zone experience as a whole, as players can essentially play it as a co-op shooter if they want to. Not only is this great for new players who are still learning the ropes, but also for more experienced PvP players who want to slow down. Again, War in the gray zone trying to say a Roadside picnic– story inspired and less sweaty, more relaxed PvE mode makes it easier. Best of all, there are no separate saves or characters for these modes: you can seamlessly switch between PvP, PvE, and PvPvE without losing progress.
It's even better with the Gray Zone Warfare 0.4 update
War in the gray zone has been gaining momentum since its release into early access in 2024, but the latest patch has significantly revived interest in the game. Update 0.4, which launched on March 31st, brings a myriad of improvements Gray zonewith some of the most notable including:
-
More than 100 new tasks and contracts (quests)
-
More than 25 new locations
-
Improvements to lighting, visual effects and user interface
-
Another tradition to discover
-
Eight new weapons and over 150 new pieces of equipment
The game is still in early access, so it goes without saying that it's not perfect. For example, War in the gray zoneThe enemy AI is a bit lacking in the intelligence department and the quest design can be hit or miss. But the match is like that Gray zone so far it's in surprisingly great condition to the point where it's a suitable replacement ARC Raiders, Marathon, Tarkovand other leading extraction shooter/military sims. Hopefully the game can keep this momentum going towards its 1.0 release whenever possible.
