The 2021 Mystery Anime Odd Taxi is even better on Crunchyroll Blu-Ray

After years of fan interest across social media, a unique mystery anime series has been created A special taxi was released on Blu-ray in North America Crunchyroll on Blu-ray in October 2025. This was the first time the adaptation of Kazuya Konomoto and Takeichi Abaraya's work had been made available in the format outside of Japan, and after I got my hands on it, it was definitely worth the wait. Winning Best Protagonist and Best Director at the 6th Annual Crunchyroll Anime Awards, the quirky series proved to be more than meets the eye when it hit the small screen in 2021, and fans quickly fell in love with its characters, writing, and ubiquitous art style. Set in a world of anthropomorphic animals, it made an immediate impression, and Crunchyroll is giving fans a chance to bring the action home.

A special taxi follows Hiroshi Odokawa, a 41-year-old walrus taxi driver who is painfully antisocial, stemming from being abandoned by his parents in elementary school. However, being a taxi driver means that chatting with clients is inevitable, and Hiroshi often finds himself in conversation with the many riders who seek his services in Tokyo. These cottages slowly begin to unravel into a collection of mysteries and conspiracies, including the case of a missing high school girl. This makes both the police and the yakuza realize that Hiroshi's camera can reveal what happened to her. It's a perfect example of an anime series made to be consumed in one go and not soon forgotten by the audience.

Crunchyroll's Odd Taxi Blu-Ray release is a must for fans of 2021's most unexpected hit

There has been a resurgence of interest in physical media over the past few years, with many fans choosing to invest in their personal libraries instead of dealing with streaming services. While Crunchyroll's catalog is robust and constantly adding new content, the company is also responding to this new surge in demand by releasing many classic and recent series on DVD and Blu-ray. When streaming A special taxi is still a choice, Blu-ray's quality is a step up, with its native 1080p High Definition 16:9 aspect ratio making even the tiniest details pop on my 65″ TV. Both Japanese and English audio are available, and Dolby TrueHD definitely has a sharpness that elevates the dialogue and soundtrack of the 13-part series.

Alas, the Blu-ray release A special taxi it doesn't include any other physical goodies, apart from a double-sided cover and a case. Many other recent Crunchyroll releases have been packaged with bonus items that you can view on the shelf, but this one is a simpler affair. The official Blu-ray box set was released in Japan in limited quantities, packed with a new art book, soundtrack CD, 3D Odokawa figure and more, but nabbing one of these rare items might not be easy in 2026. Still, being able to put the series on the shelf is worth celebrating.

The Complete Odd Taxi Collection on Blu-ray costs $69.98, but is discounted to $53.18 for subscribers. While currently backordered, the release is scheduled to be back in stock on July 30, 2026.

The lack of bonus bells and whistles may frustrate some

In terms of bonus features, the two-disc set includes textless versions of the opening and closing themes, a promotional video and commercials for the series, all with approximately five minutes of extras. That's not much in the grand scheme of things, but being able to more deeply appreciate the hand-drawn feel of the opening theme is a good moment. Similarly, the hypnotic ending animation of Hiroshi's taxi speeding down the highway to Suzuko Mimori's “Sugarless Kiss” was a surprisingly relaxing experience.

Fans A special taxi Those who don't want to lose access to the series or simply want to show their support for the creators will not regret grabbing this Blu-ray release. Those hoping for more bells and whistles may be a little disappointed, though seeing Crunchyroll listen to fan outcry and physically release the show at all is a big win. Maybe some bonus skits or creator interviews wouldn't go amiss, but at the price it's still a solid offering for any anime fan's growing collection of physical media. A special taxi is still available to stream on Crunchyroll for now.
