Wizards of the Coast has reportedly greenlit remakes of Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn. Both remakes are believed to be in development at the same time, meaning they could both launch around the same time.
This is according to sources speaking to PC Gamer. Here, PC Gamer says he has knowledge of a Baldur's Gate 2 remake, and says that this likely means a Baldur's Gate 1 remake is being developed alongside it, as BG2 is a direct sequel. Kevin Martens, who was the lead designer on the original Baldur's Gate 2, is said to be leading the project.
Legend BioWare is reportedly working on remakes of the classic Baldur's Gate
The first Baldur's Gate was released in 1998 and Baldur's Gate 2 in 2000. Both were developed by BioWare before the studio moved on to KOTOR and then their own IPs like Mass Effect and Dragon Age.
Now, PC Gamer says it's learned that both are getting the remake treatment. The report focuses more on the Baldur's Gate 2 remake, which is said to be being helmed by Kevin Martens. It is unclear if he would also be working on a remake of the first game.
While the report assumes that the first game will be getting a remake based on the idea that the second is, it wouldn't be too surprising to see WotC commission a remake of only the second game. Baldur's Gate 2 is the first time we've started seeing many of the features that would become staples of BioWare games, such as chatty companions and romance. In comparison, the first game is a bit quiet, and fans of Baldur's Gate 3 returning to the originals may not be enthralled by the game.
Of course, a remake means they could edit it. The first game introduced characters familiar to Baldur's Gate 3 fans like Jaheira, Viconia, Minsc and Sarevok, so the potential is there.
I mention Baldur's Gate 3 so much because it's no doubt what sparked WotC's desire to do something with these classics. They're fantastic in their own right and definitely worth playing, but WotC didn't do much with the series before Baldur's Gate 3 came along. We got the Enhanced Edition remasters in 2012 and 2013, but other than that, WotC was in no rush to give us anything else.
Whatever happens, we can safely assume that Larian has nothing to do with it. The studio has already made it clear that they will not be making another Baldur's Gate game, despite the success of BG3. Instead, he's working on two RPGs of his own, one of which we know is Divinity.
