God Of War Laufey “Looks Like Sh*t”, According To David Jaffe, Compares It To Forspoken

Yesterday, during the first of many major showcases this summer, PlayStation revealed the heavily rumored God of War title based on Kratos' wife, Faye. Titled God of War Laufey, the game ties into the events of the 2018 reboot, as players enter the afterlife with Faye. And a cube.

Any new God of War game is met with excitement; however, there is one person who wasn't impressed with the reveal at all: series creator, David Jaffe, who said the game “looks like sh*t”.

Jaffe livestreamed his reactions to yesterday's State of Play, casting judgment on everything revealed by PlayStation, and he was generally positive about the event. There were two games in particular that he didn't seem to like, though: Marvel's Wolverine and God of War Laufey.

The developer-turned-YouTuber felt that Wolverine was “very generic looking from a gameplay standpoint,” but he, unsurprisingly, had more scathing things to say about Laufey.

“That looks like sh*t, I'm gonna be honest with you,” he remarks after the showcase ends. “Reminds me of that game Forspoken.

“Here's the first thing I'm thinking when I watch that trailer. It feels to me like it has become a producer's studio. Cory is staggeringly talented. He is a much better writer than I ever was. He's a smart guy. It feels very much like he got forced into a situation where it's like 'we can't give you money to make a brand-new thing; you try to do what you want, but do it in the context of God of War.' I'm just making this sh*t up. I don't know if that's why it looks that way. It just feels so uninspired and so dull.”

It's dead. That game is not going to do well for what they expect it to do…

He adds that “It's dead. That game is not going to do well for what they expect it to do,” before unleashing another barrage of criticism.

“This just feels like Cory or somebody wanted to write a fantasy story,” he tells viewers. “You've lost the gore and violence of the first game. You've lost the character — you already lost him after 2018 because he changed so much he wasn't Kratos anymore — now you've lost the identifiable mythology of it. You've lost me with the cube and the little Disney character at the beginning. It just seems like a fantasy.”

While he did enjoy elements of the trailer, namely the combat, Jaffe hammers home the fact that he feels the game looks a bit… dull.

“If they had taken God of War off the title, and you didn't know the God of War story and there wasn't Kratos, it was just a story about a goddess who died, you wouldn't be talking about it… This looks like more of the same sh*t. [It’s] really fucking goofy, man. Nobody pulled somebody aside and said, 'This is not God of War. ' I don't know what the fuck it is.

“It looks dull, it looks repetitive, it looks like it's been there, done that. The cover is terrible. The name is terrible. It looks like forspoken. It's got that flavor to it; it feels very uninspired.”

It's not the first time Jaffe has been unhappy with the franchise's modern direction. He admits to loving God of War 2018, but said he felt Amazon's teaser for the God of War series was “terrible in so many ways,” and questioned, “What were they thinking?” about God of War: Sons of Sparta.
