Magic: The Gathering Details Design Process for Marvel Super Heroes
Magic: The Gathering Lead designer Mark Rosewater and executive producer Athena Froehlich recently spoke about the creation process Marvel Super Heroes file. Rosewater shared that Marvel has largely kept the card game design Marvel Super Heroes at Wizards of the Coast and simply told the company to “do good Magic sets.” Marvel largely signed off on many of Wizards of the Coast's decisions, allowing Wizards to decide how to divide the scene and giving Wizards creative freedom. Froehlich also touched on the friendly meetings the company had, saying that the meetings with Marvel were “some of the most fun” for the Wizards of the Coast team.

The creative freedom afforded Wizards of the Coast has resulted in bold and creative deck card designs. The Marvel Super Heroes Crossover introduces some tasty new mechanics to the game, such as Power-Up, which gives creatures unique power-ups, and Teamwork, which makes creatures work together for greater effects. Wizards of the Coast also draws on several mechanics that have been prevalent in 2025 Spider-Man crossover where the villains make heavy use of the Connive mechanic and also add more double-faced hero cards.
