Helldivers 2 Game Addition Roguelite mode change called Planet Warfronts

Game Director Mikael Eriksson revealed the upcoming addition of Planet Warfront missions Helldivers 2which adds a more dynamic and roguelite style for players to try out. Helldivers 2 has been constantly changing and evolving since its original launch in 2024, not only adding new enemy factions and variants, but giving players access to new environments, activities, and tools of destruction.

All of this was partly made up Helldivers 2 the world feels alive and ever-changing. While things haven't always been smooth sailing, as Helldivers 2 struggled with performance and technical issues in the second half of 2025, things have stabilized since then, allowing Arrowhead Game Studios to tease future content. In fact, the lengthy post gave players an even better look at how Arrowhead plans to continue developing the game in the near future.

Helldivers 2 reveals Planet Warfronts missions

In a long post to the community Helldivers 2 game director Mikael Eriksson discussed the immediate plans for the popular multiplayer game. A big element of this post was player and community progression, with Arrowhead trying to make Galactic War of Helldivers 2 feel more alive and players have more of a say in things. Later this month, Galactic War Campaigns will be added, an evolution of the current Major Orders system that lasts 1-3 weeks and will better communicate how things are and what's at stake for the game world. Even better, this system will offer more rewards than just medals if conditions are met.

A bit further, Eriksson also revealed new missions called Planet Warfronts, a more dynamic style activity that takes inspiration from other roguelite games. These missions are basically grouped into 3 possible categories: defending a liberated territory, engaging in a frontline war, or being stuck behind enemy lines. Players will fight to reach key strategic locations on planets such as cities, which may also have enemy variants on different parts of the planet to contend with. There will also be gameplay-altering effects, consequences for achieving liberation goals (such as a timer for reaching a certain point), as well as a game master twisting certain elements during gameplay. The goal is to make each run feel fun and unique.

Experimentation with the game's core system has seemingly always been at the forefront of the studio, with Eriksson admitting that dynamic warfronts were being attempted before the game even launched. However, at the time the team felt there wasn't enough content to draw from, so plans were put on hold.

In the same vein, Arrowhead CCO Johan Pilestedt previously talked about adding sequel-level ideas to Helldivers 2. While mentioning the roguelite modes that spawned the feature, Pilestedt also discussed other potential ideas, such as larger, more open maps where players could meet, combine, and face bigger challenges together.

Alternatively, another goal is to find a way to add a bigger lobby and expand the team size, specifically 8 players are mentioned. However, the problem was more on the technical side, the big issue being the potential performance issues that ultimately dragged down the experience. Arrowhead Game Studios CEO Shams Jorjani initially refused Helldivers 2 idea when suggested by a fan citing technical issues and potential frame rate issues. However, the technical side Helldivers 2 has improved over the past few months, so maybe it's more plausible now than it used to be.
