Epic Games is reversing the decision and allowing players to unlock the Matte Black style.
Fortnite previously announced that the Matte Black style for The Master Chief would no longer be unlockable, but has now reversed its stance and is making it available again. While Fortnite fans eagerly awaited the return of The Master Chief skin, the removal of the style drew widespread community response.
December is one of the most common months Fortnite fans. With events like the Winter Festival Fortniteplayers will get tons of new NPCs, quests, items and more in the game. While the event was well received by the community this year, the return of some skins did not go down well. In the midst of this, Epic Games provided an update on Master Chief's appearance.

Fortnite update adds fan favorites to OG Battle Royale
Epic Games is releasing a new update for Fortnite that brings back some legendary fan-favorite weapons and gear to the Battle Royale.
In a new tweet Fortnite reveals good news for players looking to get the Master Chief skin. Skin Master Chief debuted in Fortnite all the way back in 2020 and became an instant hit. While he last appeared in the Item Shop in 2022, fans were quite excited to see the return of the Master Chief skin in Fortnite in 2024. However, on December 23, Epic Games revealed that the Matte Black style for the skin would no longer be available, which was not the case previously. Fortnite revealed back in 2020 that anyone could unlock the style at any time after purchasing the skin and simply play the game on the Xbox Series X/S. Now, it has changed its mind again, stating that players will be able to get the Matte Black style whenever they want, as stated in the first announcement.
The Master Chief Skin had a controversial return to Fortnite
Fans weren't happy before Fortnite's announcement, with many saying it could lead to hot water with the FTC. Coincidentally, the FTC recently returned $72 million worth of money Fortnite players due to the use of “dark patterns” by Epic Games. Fans were particularly unhappy that the change affected players who bought the skin right now, as well as previous owners. This means that even if someone bought the skin back in 2020, they wouldn't be able to unlock the style.
This isn't the only skin that's been controversial lately. For example, Epic Games recently brought back the Renegade Raider skin to the game. While some were quite excited about it, the old Fortnite players threatened to end the game because of the move. Even now, some Fortnite fans are demanding the OG style for players who bought the Master Chief skin at launch. While Epic Games has surely fixed the Matte Black style situation, the addition of the OG style seems quite unlikely.
