No Man's Sky: The 10 best types of planets for life

From Lush to Exotic and even Frozen, here are the best types of planets to call home in No Man's Sky.

If you'd like to experience the universe in the most dangerous way possible, where one mistake means certain death and ensures you'll never return to the sunset under which your unfortunate demise occurred, then playing No Man's Sky on permadeath will be for you.

Basics of Permadeath difficulty

Creating a new save in No Man's Sky, selecting the Permadeath difficulty setting.

Permadeath difficulty is exactly what it sounds like; just like the real world death is permanent. Here it is no reload from last save: before deleting the save file you will be met with a quote about the universe that will give you a screen of death.

Lots of tips in this guide they will aimed at newer playersor players at least less familiar with later NMS mechanics.

Always stock up on essential resources

A strange metallic looking plant provides carbon when collected in No Man's Sky.

There is little room for error in permadeath, so it helps to be prepared for any situation. The best way to do this is maintain a steady supply of resources which you will need regularly, some of which will stay alive and others to make things you will need often. These sources include:

  • Oxygen
  • Carbon
  • Ferrite dust
  • Sodium
  • Di-hydrogen

Life support gel

Creating life support gel in no man's sky.

Carbon and Di-hydrogen they will the two most important resources you can have with youand fortunately they are two of the easiest to obtain. Planets will very often have di-hydrogen crystals scattered about, and planets that have any amount of plant life are almost guaranteed to contain carbon.

You will have to crafts Di-Hydrogen Jelly do Life support geland you'll need that Life Support Gel to stay alive. Your life support won't run out while you're on the space station, the Anomaly, or your ship, but it will on the planets.

  • Life support gel = 1x Di-Hydrogen Jelly + 20x Carbon

Life Support depletes faster when sprinting and even faster when using the jetpack.

Recharging your protection against danger

Fully charge Hazard Protection in No Man's Sky.

Much of the planets in NMS will be so dangerous to your health that your suit will have to expend energy to keep you alive. This will deplete your Hazard Protection; once it reaches zero you start taking environmental damage. While not too dangerous on normal difficulty, it is easy way to lose a run in permadeath.

You can recharge your Hazard Protection with sodium, sodium nitrate and ion batteries. You will be using a lot of sodium to do this in the beginning. Later on, Nitrate and Ion batteries will be much more useful for this as they require less to regenerate.

  • Ion battery = 10x cobalt + 5x ferrite dust

Use the scanner to locate sodium-rich plants on the HUD; it will appear as yellow with a “On” symbol.

Keep your launch jets charged

Launch Thrusters that are less than half charged in No Man's Sky.

A lot can go wrong on the surface of a planet, whether it's losing track of your life support, being attacked by a predator or enemy guards, or, the most likely problem, misjudging your Hazard Protection.

When this is the case, the ability to call your ship to your location can save your life. But, if your launch jets have less than 60 percent fuelyou will unable to do so. Keep them fueled as much as possible, and if you know they aren't properly powered, don't take any chances.

Get nanite clusters to buy blueprints

The player has more than 1500 Nanite Clusters stored in No Man's Sky.

Getting Nanite Clusters is pretty easy, and you'll need a lot of them. Nanite Clusters are spent in the Anomaly to purchase blueprints for different items. Many of these are module upgrades that you can attach to your suit, your ship, and more.

These modules will make life much easieror are directly necessary to progress through the game, such as upgraded hyperdrives.

Plans available in Anomaly

Room in Anomaly dedicated to buying blueprints in No Man's Sky.

Here are some plans to buy for Nanite Clusters that you might want to consider or outright need on permadeath difficulty:

A quick way to get Nanite Clusters

Upload discoveries to No Man's Sky and earn Nanite Clusters for your efforts.

One of the fastest and safest ways to get enough Nanite Clusters to get everything you need is scanning all the fauna on the planet. This generally doesn't take too long and isn't particularly dangerous on the right planet. Use your best judgment on what planet you do this on; don't wear out your welcome on the dangerous.

Make sure you upload your scan date in the Discoveries section to get your Nanite Clusters.

Avoid easy ways of death

A planet that can be seen through the cockpit windshield in No Man's Sky appears.

They exist many easy ways to die in NMS; many of them will be at the beginning. Watch out for them as they are easy traps to fall into and before you know it you're back at the beginning.

Enemy starting planet

A frozen planet in no man's sky with a temperature of -66°C.

Sometimes the planet you start the game on is particularly hostile. When you have no quality of life bonuses and survival is the hardest, right they rub off easily within the first ten minutes.

One easy way around this is skip the tutorial when setting the difficulty. If you already know the basic mechanics of NMS, you won't learn anything from it anyway. And you're missing some of the basic tools that make survival easier in the tutorial.

In particular, you start without a terrain manipulator in the tutorial; you can use this to dig beneath the planet's surface to recharge your Hazard Protection. Without it, you'll need the cover of a cave or your ship.

Instant raid on your ship

Asteroid field seen through cockpit windshield in No Man's Sky.

Similarly, it is possible to get ambushed by enemy pirates on your first foray into space. Space combat in NMS isn't particularly difficult in general, but on a ship with no bells and whistles and no real escape option, you can die fast.

It's hard to get around; just be ready to fight if there is a fight. Once you manage to summon the Anomaly, you can use it to escape from space battles Until then, escaping to the planet's surface is a good bet if you happen to be close enough. It is also possible to win the battle if you are willing to engage.

I'm getting impatient

Looking down from a large cliff at the facility below in No Man's Sky.

Being impatient and taking risks is an easy way to die. This is true for any endeavor; mining the last item in front of a guard watching you closely, using your jetpack for one second too long, going too deep underwater to surface before you drown; the list goes on.

These are all easily preventable deaths, but dying this way is deceptively easy. Each time there is a small chance that any of them will end in disaster, but the more chance you will have, they are worse.

How to unlock the “Live Forever” achievement/trophy.

A view of the Anomaly through the cockpit windshield in No Man's Sky.

The To Live Forever Achievement is earned by reaching the Galactic Core in permadeath mode. Depending on how you do it, it can be relatively simple or extremely daunting.

How to reach the galactic core

The priestly entity Nada stands in the Anomaly in the sky of no man.

Many players reach the galactic core the old-fashioned way and following primary missions is the perfect way to do this. Over time, you'll gather most of the plans and knowledge you'll need to do this.

But that can take time, and every second you live in permadeath is another second you risk dying. If you're after just this achievement, you might want to get in and out as quickly as possible.

How to quickly reach the galactic core

The portal sits in an Anomaly in no man's sky, within which lies infinite possibilities.

Reaching the galactic core quickly is not as difficult as it seems. Once you advance in Artemis Path primary mission, you will begin to discover glyphs. You can use these glyphs as coordinates when traveling through portals.

There are a lot of possible spoilers after this noteso if you don't want to know about using glyphs to fast travel to the center of the galaxy, skip the last part of this guide.

Entrance to Sunset Glyph 12 times in line on the portal will take you to the location within a few hops of the center of the galaxy. Hence, if you have a fully powered by Indium Hyperdriveyou will be able toeach Galactic Coreand get the Live Forever achievementwithout any major problems.
