Choosing the right character in The Forever Winter

At this stage of Early Access, the extraction shooter has five different characters for players to choose from, each with a different skill tree and stats that affect how they play. Naturally, for players who gravitate toward a certain playstyle, there's likely to be a specific character that fits that profile.

Old man

Choosing the right character in The Forever Winter - Old Man

This character is a Survivalist and has skills that focus on getting the most out of medical supplies. He is proficient enough with basic weapons that you can rely on rifles, shotguns, heavy rifles, and pistols. With his average health and speed, Old Man is a decent choice for a solo player, but works best in a group.

Scav Girl

Choosing the right character in The Forever Winter - Scav Girl

As for the Scav Girl, this individual is all about speed and covert operations, giving them an edge over others when it comes to movement. Her skills affect speed and hand weapons, and she has a smaller health pool to balance her increased speed. Trained in rifles, shotguns, pistols, and submachine guns, her ability to see loot icons through the HUD at twice the distance of others makes her a valuable looting pro.

The mask man

Mask Man is a master weapon for a reason and forgoes any nuance for weapons skills that make him a force to be reckoned with. Even with average health and speed, his training in rifles, shotguns, pistols, and submachine guns levels the playing field, and being able to see mining sites at twice the distance compared to others always has its uses.

Shaman

Choosing the right character in The Forever Winter - Shaman

For those who need more carrying capacity, the logistics master that is the Shaman is the best choice. Similar to Scav Girl in being able to see loot icons more effectively, Shaman can use rifles, shotguns, pistols, and submachine guns early on. Skills focusing on a combination of speed, carry, and weapons allow players to be more versatile.

Bag Man

Finally, the Bagger is all about strength, and his skills focus on carrying and heavy weapons. His low speed balances out his high health, but his ability to wield rifles, shotguns, light machine guns, heavy machine guns, and heavy rifles can make this character a useful ally to have in both conflict and looting.

How to upgrade characters in The Forever Winter

By using specific characters and weapons, players will gain experience in different ways. Gain enough experience with your weapons and you'll start unlocking other items that you can buy from vendors. So if you've been looking for a powerful weapon, it's best to keep improving your craft with a weapon type. At the same time, character experience will increase, allowing players to unlock skills to increase their effectiveness or unlock new items and equipment to use.

Once you reach your XP limit, you will be able to gain prestige. Each time you opt for Prestige, you will:

  • Improve your character's base stats
  • Increase the XP limit for the next level of prestige
  • Restore all previously acquired skills

This is the best way to level up a character while gaining access to the entire skill tree. The more you play and the better you survive, the more you can enjoy. Note that while items and power-ups may be lost if Inards run out of water, your XP, unlocked skills, and prestige levels will not reset.
