NRL star Braydon Trindall has been charged by police after allegedly failing a roadside alcohol and drug test on Monday morning.

The Sharks no. 6 was pulled over for a random breath test on Captain Cook Drive in Caringbah about 9.45am before returning a breath analysis reading of 0.124 as well as a positive result to cocaine.

The test came after his team defeated the North Queensland Cowboys 42-6 at PointsBet Stadium in the Sutherland Shire on Sunday afternoon to put them at the top of the NRL ladder.

In a statement, NSW Police said Trindall was also driving with an expired license.

“The (24)-year-old man was issued an infringement notice for unlicensed driver – expired licence,” the statement said.

“Proceedings were also commenced for driving with middle range prescribed concentration of alcohol and drive with illicit drug present in oral fluid.”

He will face the charges at Sutherland Local Court on May 17.

Trindall has since undergone a second oral fluid test which is yet to confirm the positive cocaine reading.

In a lengthy statement, the Cronulla Sharks said Trindall would not be participating in games or training “for the short term” in an effort to “attend to his welfare and health issues”.

“Trindall reported the result of the roadside tests immediately to Sharks management, who in turn informed the NRL integrity unit,” the club statement said.

“The matter has been referred for a court appearance in May where Trindall will face the allegations and charges levelled against him, noting that a secondary sample of the illicit drug test is yet to be confirmed.”

The Sharks said they were working with the NRL integrity unit on the matter.

“The Sharks treat these issues extremely seriously, however they are providing Trindall with the necessary welfare support,” the Sharks said.

“The NRL integrity unit was informed of an incident involving Cronulla Sharks player Braydon Trindall and is liaising with the club,” the NRL said in a statement.

Trindall was promoted to a permanent spot in the halves alongside halfback Nicho Hynes following the departure of Matt Moylan at the end of last year.

Promising up-and-comer Daniel Atkinson has replaced Trindall and start against Canberra on Sunday afternoon.
