Insomniac Games has confirmed that Venom will not be Peter Parker or Eddie Brock in Spider-Man 2, teasing that his identity will be a big part of the game’s story.

We only got the first big gameplay reveal for Spider-Man 2 a few weeks ago, but it seems Insomniac Games isn’t done cooking yet, as it made a surprise appearance at Summer Game Fest. Insomniac Games Creative Director Bryan Intihar took the stage to tell us the game’s release date, October 20th, as well as several new pieces of art and big new details about the game’s story.

After unveiling new artwork showing Miles and Peter battling Venom, Intihar confirmed that the big bad will not be Eddie Brock and that his identity will play a significant role in the game’s story. A piece of key art also debunked a popular fan theory that Peter Parker will be Venom in this universe, as he can clearly be seen fighting the symbiote alongside Miles.

Although Intihar is very coy about Venom’s identity in the Insomniac universe, it seems incredibly likely that he is Harry Osborn. We already know from the first game’s post-show scene that Harry needs a symbiote to live, so it’s clear that he’s somehow related to the character, but now that Insomniac has debunked the theory that it’s Peter Parker and Eddie Brock, it seems highly likely that this Harry Osborn.

That being said, the gameplay trailer makes it clear that Peter has somehow taken the symbiote from Harry, causing him to slowly die and need Kurt Conners’ help, which could indicate that it’s not him. We’re betting that Peter will eventually prove to be too much for him to handle, which will lead to a return to Harry and start his run as Venom.

In addition to a new look at Venom and Kraven, Insomniac also revealed that Spider-Man 2 is coming to PS5 on October 20th, which is slightly later than the rumors that suggested it would launch in September. We also got a brief look at the game’s cover, which is very reminiscent of the first game, except that Miles is swaying next to Peter while the symbiote appears to be crawling up his web and arm.

We also got a look at some of the new skins coming to the game via the digital deluxe edition. All ten skins revealed so far are from guest artists, meaning there’s plenty of room for some highly requested fan favorites.
