Strategy games like Age of Mythology retold require a complete thought process, and although any combination can be somewhat countered, different unit pairings will work better than others.

Basic Egyptian Army

Spearmen & Slingers in Age Of Mythology Retold

  • Available to Egyptian players
  • Available from the Classical Age

There are many different simple combinations of units Age of Mythology retoldbut the one that makes an awful lot of sense in general strategy is to put together a group of infantry units and a group of archer units. Spearmen & Slingers both can be trained in the Egyptian barracks, making them a staple early game army for Egyptian players.

Although there are many complex strategies available Age of Mythology retold players, these simple armies will always be popular due to their simplicity and success against most enemy forces. These cheap units are easy to swap out and are both counter units, making them strong against enemy infantry and archer forces, and can be heavily upgraded throughout the game to be competitive.

Hoplites/Toxotes

Standard Greek strength

Hoplites & Toxotes In Age Of Mythology Retold

  • Available to Greek players
  • Available from the Classical Age

Another basic army combination containing infantry and archery is Greek hoplites and toxotes duo. Both of these units can be trained early in the game from separate concrete buildings. The standard for defense as well as early attacks and the lack of selection for late game units on the Greek side makes these great units to combine.

Hoplites are generally considered strong infantry units and are effective at protecting Toxots, who have bonuses when fighting infantry. This means that these units will sweep all melee troops together, as Hoplites have advantages against cavalry, which will lead them to an easy victory against the human armies of most other civilizations.

Murmillo/Arcus

Atlantean Early Game Might

Murmillo & Arcus In Age Of Mythology Retold

  • Available to Atlantis players

Age Of Mythology Retold's hit strategy remake features many different gods to worship and each comes with abilities they bestow.

Arcus is a strong archery unit while Murmillo is decent as infantry and extremely cheap. The advantage of these units is that in addition to the regular upgrades they both receive throughout the game, they can be turned into heroes for additional fees. When properly resourced, this allows you to create an army of heroes that will destroy any mythic units.

5

Hers/Throwing Axemen

Norwegian infantry double

Hersir & Throwing Axemen In Age Of Mythology Retold

  • Available for Norwegian players
  • Available from the Classical Age

Nordic civilization is somewhat different from others Age of Mythology retold due to the lack of archer units at their disposal. Fortunately, they have some ranged units that aren't archers, such as Throwing axemen. Although an infantry unit, these soldiers work with ranged attacks. This means that when doubled up with powerful infantry units, a hero called SirThis army has bonuses against some of the strongest units in the game, including Mythic units, and since they are both infantry, they are not weak against many unit types.

Hersir have a huge advantage over hero units and are relatively cheap for heroes themselves. The Norse need to use them, especially since they can generate favor by fighting and randomly spawn mythic units in the process. The Norse Civilization is uncommon, but players will find it worthwhile to combine these units. Hersir are even more important later in the game when enemies will count on powerful mythic units.

4

Fanatic/Cheiroballista

The Atlantean Army Game Enders

Fanatics & Cheiroballista In Age Of Mythology Retold

  • Available to Atlantis players
  • Available from the Mythic Age

The Atlantean civilization is a complex civilization to build a standard army with. They are great at counter units, which is useful, but difficult to control and very dependent on who the player is up against. However, a strong late game option to fight any army is Fanatic and cheiroballista combination. Fanatics are very strong infantry units with bonuses against all human soldiers, so the upgraded versions of the heroes destroy almost anything.

Fanatics' big weakness is that they move slowly. This can be countered by pairing them with the Cheiroballista, which are siege weapons that are extremely powerful against anything but buildings and cavalry. It will keep the Archers from being a problem for this slow moving force, while the Fanatic upgrades will handle anything else. Cheiroballists are especially good against infantry, making it impossible for any force to stand up to fanatics.

3

Myrmidon/Medusa

The Devastating Path of Zeus

Myrmidon & Medusa In Age Of Mythology Retold

  • Available to Greek players
  • Available from the Mythic Age

This is a huge win against multiple enemies in multiplayer and can be improved by following Hera.

Age Of Mythology Retold: Early Game Mistakes To Avoid

Age Of Mythology Retold is full of strategic mistakes and mistakes that are easy to make, but new players can help avoid them.

Following Zeus as the main god means that players have the option to follow Hera in the Mythic Age, giving them access to Jellyfish. Not only is Medusa a powerful ranged mythic unit, but she also has a special ability that allows her to instantly kill any enemy unit, even mythic units, making her one of the most devastating units in the game. Even if you don't know what a player is up against, a Myrmidon defending multiple Medus is a combo that will likely win most battles, even in the late game.

2

Jarl/Hersir

A strange but deadly combo

Jarl & Hersir In Age Of Mythology Retold

  • Available for Norwegian players
  • Available from Heroic Age

The Norse civilization has many unusual quirks, but players who control different units will find great options. The Jarl is a fast cavalry unit that is good against most unit types and has advantages against human soldiers. That said, he's not very susceptible, but having an ally is always useful and Siralthough they are slower, they are heroic units with an advantage against mythic units.

Jarl units are only vulnerable to non-human attacks such as mythic units. Being supported by Hersir means they are very difficult to bring down. Jarl also helps counter the Norse's huge weakness to archers by being fast enough to negate most archery volleys. Overall, Jarl units are a huge piece in the Norse arsenal, and adding some Hersir units makes them almost unstoppable.

Camel riders/archers on chariots

Egyptian slot for late game speed

Camel riders and chariot archers in the Age of Mythology retelling

  • Available to Egyptian players
  • Available from Heroic Age

Migdol Fortress is beloved by Egyptian Civilization players because it allows access to war elephants. However, these units are slow, expensive and difficult to train. Migdol Fortress also comes with Camel drivers and archers on chariotsboth are relatively cheap and have great speed. When upgraded at the end of the game and combined with this pair of keys, enemies will be absolutely run over.

Camel Riders are strong against both other cavalry and archery units, a huge support made even better by the fact that Chariot Archers have bonuses against infantry. This is a complete set and creates a combination of units that will pass on at least any human army. There aren't many perfect combinations Age of Mythology retoldbut this pairing is a match made in heaven that can give the Egyptian players a huge advantage in the late game.
