In 2024, Pocketpair made quite a splash with the launch of the Early Access game and amassed over 2 million concurrent players in this unique Pokemon– as an open world adventure and remain one of the most played titles on Steam for several months. For the upcoming release of version 1.0, the developers are promising some serious changes and improvements, so it will be interesting to see how many players decide to dive into Palworld again.

Palworld combines exploration, combat, crafting, base building and resource gathering in a vast multi-biome world powered by sandbox freedom. Some of the biggest changes coming with the full launch include a map expansion (World Tree end area), an expanded buddy list (over 200 unique creatures in total), and notable progression changes with the addition of new mechanics like advanced breeding. While players can carry over their existing save to the full game, the team recommends a fresh start to fully appreciate all the changes to the experience.

Fun fact: most of the open world games coming this July are coming out on almost the same day, so gamers who don't like Assassin's Creed can choose something else. Echoes of Aincrad is Bandai Namco's offering. After years of being established as a fantasy setting Sword Art Onlinethe fascinating world of Aincrad opens the door to many newcomers with much-desired features such as a fully customized playable character, real-time action combat with AI partner synergies, and a “climbing” structure. The basic progression centers around players exploring and conquering a floating castle where a single floor can be filled with numerous biomes or dungeons.

Even if Echoes of Aincrad may not fully qualify as a true open world game (more of a large zone based game with strong exploration elements) and heavy on linear segments, there are still plenty of hooks for fans of the genre. The world of Aincrad is huge, beautiful and diverse, containing entire cities with amazing environments. The game promises to provide a strong layer of exploration as players gradually uncover an interconnected map as the story unfolds.
