Modern Warfare rebooted the franchise

Since its inception, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare the subseries was a fan favorite. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare brought the entire series to new heights with its campaign and multiplayer, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 took things even further and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 brought the trilogy to a mostly satisfying conclusion. To this day, these titles are often considered some of the best in the franchise, and some are even considered the best the FPS genre has to offer.

The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare trilogy helped set a new precedent for the franchise, as players seemed to love practically everything the titles contained. The campaigns are still talked about today, the handcrafted missions in the original Spec Ops mode helped give MW2 and MW3 unique taste and this trilogy now consists of only one Call of Duty titles to get remasters. But instead of expanding on the foundation of this saga with a fourth entry, the studio decided to go back to the beginning. And while that meant another great FPS that featured fan favorites being killed off, it also meant that everything that came before now meant nothing, which was sad to see.

Black Ops has moved forward with its insane timeline

Unlike Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Call of Duty: Black Ops the series has been all over the place in terms of its timeline. Focused on the Cold War Call of Duty: Black Ops is often considered one of the best games the franchise has to offer Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 featured two eras of warfare that were primarily set during the year 2025. Black Ops 3 skip ahead to 2065 and turn the franchise into a heroic shooter of sorts with their wall specialists while Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 stepped back to the 1940s and experimented with a battle royale mode instead of a campaign. Now, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 brought this sub-series back to its roots where it followed up Black Ops Cold War interrupted. Although there were some great games within Black Ops subseries, was decidedly disjointed in terms of its timeline. But despite this challenge, Treyarch has yet to reboot it and instead decided to fill in the gaps Black Ops universe with its newer releases.

While it could have gone back to the beginning, Treyarch has instead worked its way through the universe it's been building and expanding for 14 years. Every entrance, bar Black Ops 3 given his distant future, he either researched the same characters or relatives of said characters. This has helped make characters like Frank Woods, the Mason family, Jason Hudson, Viktor Resnov, and more recently Russel Adler some of the most iconic characters the franchise has to offer. Players have been able to bond over multiple titles, with their stories still being written as Treyarch continues to refine the different eras of its universe.

Call of Duty: Modern WarfareThe characters and stories will likely be forever iconic as well, but the fact that they've been completely rebooted means that players can juggle two versions of said stories, with the new timeline also returning to familiar ground and being watched by longtime fans who feel like some the characters and moments don't match the old one Modern wars. black ops 6, on the other hand, he builds on the original stories with new ones, which helps his characters feel more realized and developed. Plus, it means that everything that happened before still matters in the grand scheme of things, with Treyarch able to call up important moments and keep interest Black Ops veterans while still trying new things.
