Black Ops 7's Kowakujo is poised to become one of the best zombie maps ever

When discussing the largest Cod Zombie maps of all time, the top 4 are pretty much set in stone. Marching across the battlefield are Origins and their unforgettable robots, Mob of the Dead and its brilliant storytelling in Alcatraz, Shadows of Evil's detailed Morg City and the introduction of the first real boss fight in Der Eisendrache mode. However, things start to look a little different at spot number five. Some point to BO4The best Chaos, IX or Ancient Evil maps, while others have a weak spot for the Zombies Buried map. Gorod Krovi, a Black Ops 3 gem, is also brought up regularly, and interestingly, it's the map that Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 he just linked with his movie Kowakujo.

Referencing Gorod Krovi is a bold move because he does it immediately Black Ops 7 fans recall the “golden era” of the regime that was Black Ops 3. Still, it's impossible not to see the similarities, as Kowakujo's opening cutscene begins with the heroes falling from the sky and into a new map – just like Primis in Gorodo Krovi's intro. In addition, the map will seemingly feature dragon combat, as well as the iconic Gorod Krovi boss battle, further connecting the two maps. Sure, the new map focuses on Takeo's story as opposed to Nikolai's and features a volcano-struck settlement as opposed to war-torn Stalingrad, but the framing of the film and the presence of dragons in a fiery setting is hard to ignore. These parallels indicate that Treyarch has faith in Kowakujo, but they're not the only reason Zombies fans should mark June 25th on their calendars.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 1 and 2 are officially back

Treyarch confirms on Twitter that the classic Call of Duty games, Black Ops 1 and Black Ops 2, are returning.

Kowakujo rides Momentum of Totenreich

For the first time in more than five years, it looks like a whole Cod The Zombies community was united in its appreciation of the new map when Totenreich was released. Sure, there have been A-tier maps since then Black Ops 4 — Both Citadelle Des Morts and Shattered Veil were excellent Black Ops 6 – but they still had issues that old-school players couldn't overcome. Totenreich is special though. A truly memorable boss fight, a large and beautiful map, exclusive gear items to chase, and side easter eggs with rewards that differ from the typical save or Aether Tool drops all help elevate the map.

Totenreich is probably the first time since Ancient Evil that a Zombies map belongs in the same discussion as eternal greats like Origins and Shadows of Evil. And with this S-tier map, Treyarch seems to have finally found the right balance between old-school depth and modern Zombies with simplified mechanics that make it easier for new players to get into the mode. Treyarch has certainly been accepted into Totenreich and it can be assumed that it will approach future maps in the same way. The presence of a unique special enemy in Kowakujo hints at this again, so with the momentum behind it, it's safe to assume that another great map could be released within days.

And besides Totenreich, Black Ops 7 was a great iteration of the mode. Sure, Paradox Junction was a bit of a disappointment as Nuketown was done to death, but its quest was better than many expected, and it's probably the best Nuketown Zombies map to date. All other maps did things the community wanted. For years, players have wanted to see another TranZit-like map sting, and they got it with Ashes of the Damned. Similarly, George Romero's special nemesis from Call of the Dead has been delayed for another go, and Astra Malorum has provided it via OSCAR. Smaller survival maps, an excellent Cursed mode with Relics that work like Halo skulls, experimental modes like Rogue Run, Dead Ops Arcade 4 and a stellar camo grind are all other strengths. Overall, BO7 Zombies was excellent, so it's safe to assume Kawakujo will be no different.

Kowakujo's homage to Tom Kane means there is no room for failure

In addition to the parallels with Gorod Kro, the intro movie for Kowakujo confirms that this Takeo-themed map will serve as a tribute to Tom Kane, the original Takeo actor who played him from A world at war on Black Ops 4. Unfortunately, he was unable to return to voice Takeo in BO7 due to a stroke, and his recent death in May 2026 was a heartbreaking moment for his many fans within Cod Zombie community. Those players were hoping for a special side quest that would serve as a tribute to Kane on Take's map, and now it seems likely that they'll get that and then some. If Treyarch was even remotely concerned about the quality of Kowakuja, it wouldn't be immortalizing Tom Kane in the map's intro. With Treyarch coming from Totenreich, deliberately making players think of Gorod Krovi, and having an obligation to honor the late Tom Kane with this map, it seems like there's no world where Kowakujo isn't a top-notch experience.
