Haunted Esquie artwork sparks new Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Boss Fight Theories
Although no bosses were named in the announcement, some fans are convinced that Esquie will be one of them after a creepy depiction of the lovable giant surfaced on the game's official social media channels. The move has sparked speculation that a darker take on Esquie is coming with the free update – either in the form of a mood swing or an “evil twin” character. Sandfall has yet to give specific details on how the DLC will expand Clair Obscur: Expedition 33's boss lineup, which makes educated guesses difficult, but also leaves all options on the table for now.
There is a simpler explanation for Spooky Esquie's artwork
There's also an easier way to interpret recent developments: with the Halloween season in full swing, the avatar swap may be more of a playful nod to the calendar than a cryptic allusion to an upcoming boss. Free of charge Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 the update doesn't yet have a release date or even a release window, so it's unlikely to launch before 2026. Therefore, it may be too early for Sandfall and Kepler to start teasing its content beyond what was already said in the original announcement.
Would the Esquia boss fight work as well?
Esquie was widely praised as a breakout star Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Shaped like a vintage wine bottle, the gentle giant quickly endeared himself to fans through a mix of poignant and funny quotes, all brought to life by French actor Maxence Cazorla's memorable performance. Several in-game characters refer to him as an extremely powerful being, and players themselves witness his usefulness after he joins the party and helps them move.
So there is a precedent in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 tradition for Esquie to serve as a formidable boss fight should Sandfall choose to go in that direction. And while there seems to be no narrative reason for the expedition to fight him, some of the existing boss encounters in the game prove that its writers are willing and able to justify clashes between allies in certain circumstances.
