MARRIAGETOXIN follows a young man named Hikaru Gero who comes from the Poison Clan, a family with hundreds of years of professional assassin history. Gero never thought of himself as someone who could live a normal life, as the dark garter belt is all he's ever known, so things like dating and marriage are naturally out of the question for him. However, he is cornered by the elders of the Poison Clan when they declare that if he cannot marry and produce an heir to continue their bloodline, then his sister will be forced to bear the child against her wishes. He then tries to broker a deal to marry one of his assassination targets, marriage con artist Mei Kinosaki, but Kinosaki refuses and instead offers to teach Gera the art of seduction and developing attraction so he can find someone he really wants to marry. .
How is MARRIAGETOXIN like Spy X Family?
A story of two underground worlds coming together
The simplest comparison between MARRIAGETOXIN and Spy x Family lies in how both are action series that combine the high-octane with the romantic or mundane, and feature main characters from dark or mysterious backgrounds who engage in particularly dangerous work that requires secrecy in their personal lives. For Spy x FamilyYor is an assassin who kills those deemed traitors to Ostania, while her husband-of-reason, Loid Forger, happens to be a spy for the enemy of Westalis, who is trying to get their adopted child Anya (again, out of convenience) into a prestigious school to became close to a person of interest. Anya herself keeps a secret: the fact that she is a psychic capable of listening to other people's thoughts, and therefore the fact that she knows what her parents actually do.
IN MARRIAGETOXINGero comes from a family of assassins who use toxic substances to dispatch their targets, which coincides with Yor's occupation but somewhat combines with Loid's as the stealth aspect is even more important to the way Gero destroys his targets. and more reflective of Lloyd's espionage and ability to disguise himself to get closer to the goal of his mission. Mei Kinosaki is a con artist who makes her money by getting gullible rich guys to fall in love with her and give her exorbitant amounts of money before she disappears, not to mention another secret she's keeping that we'll leave alone for now.
Every now and then I can't help but wonder how nice it would be to find someone special and settle down… and that part of me makes me sick.
A special ingredient in MARRIAGETOXIN
Great main characters and an unexpected take on a well-established group of tropes
What is interesting Spy x Family is that it has an elite cast of characters, each bringing something special to each major aspect of the title. MARRIAGETOXIN boasts a similar strength, with the central relationship between Gero and Mei not quite being romantic, but not entirely out of the question either, but also how the series subverts expectations that they enter into some sort of marriage of convenience. The “conflict” isn't that Gero is trying to play the role of someone who could produce an heir and thus maintain his bloodline, but rather the fact that Gero is actually genuinely interested in finding someone, but also feels pressured by how poison Clan threatens his sister, who is not interested in participating in the family business.
Gero takes on the responsibility of continuing his family's bloodline to protect his sister's happiness, as he has his own girlfriend that he would like to settle down with, but he and his family cannot force her to give birth to an heir. Aside from the emotional aspects, the series boasts incredible art and unexpectedly well-done fight sequences that are just as exciting as you'd expect from a killer series. Long story short, MARRIAGETOXIN has all the pieces it needs to be a hit in the same thematic vein as Spy x Familyand definitely worth a look. While no anime has been announced yet, hopefully it will be confirmed soon.
