While news of a new Star Fox game coming exclusively to the Nintendo Switch 2 was welcomed by many fans of Nintendo's space adventure franchise, the revelation that it was yet another remake made the announcement equally controversial. The Star Fox the franchise is no stranger to remakes, featuring several retellings of the original story throughout the series' life. Even with the updated visuals and additional cutscenes of this new entry, some long Star Fox fans aren't too keen on returning to the same levels they've experienced several times before.
Star Fox is making somewhat of a comeback in 2026, despite not having received a new game in almost a decade. Enter Fox McCloud Super Mario Galaxy Movie rekindled interest in the series among many fans while also introducing the character to a new audience. With this new audience, they are likely to jump in Star Fox With the Switch 2 game coming out in June for the first time, it's understandable why a remake was chosen over a new entry. However, this game will be the fourth entry in the series to be a remake, which means half of all Star Fox the games tell the same story.

original Star Fox for the SNES is the most frequently remade game, which was understandable when Star Fox 64 better graphics followed, using the 3D visuals of the N64 console. Other unique items in the franchise include Star Fox Guard and Star Fox 2. Star Fox Guard is a tower defense style game starring Slippy Toad and included in the package Star Fox Zero on Wii U. Star Fox 2 is an interesting release, given that it was originally planned as a direct sequel to the SNES Star Fox before it was canceled and postponed even though it was completed. It was eventually released as a SNES Classic Edition exclusive in 2017, but has since made its way into the Nintendo Switch Online SNES library.
Star Fox games that are remakes
Star Fox 64
Second overall game released in Star Fox the franchise is actually a remake of the first game. Star Fox 64 it is often considered the defining entry in the series due to the expanded gameplay and improved visual presentation over the original. Although the story is largely the same as the original Star Fox, Star Fox 64 added new features such as split-screen multiplayer and new vehicles, including the Landmaster and Blue-Marine submarine. Star Fox 64 it also added full voice acting and was the first game to use the N64's Rumble Pack controller add-on to enhance player immersion.
Star Fox 64 3D
After Star Fox: Assault and Star Fox Command were released in back-to-back years, the series went on hiatus for a while. Although it's not a one-to-one remake of the original Star Fox or Star Fox 64Zero shares most of the core mechanics, levels, and story of those games. Added Star Fox Zero are features such as the ability to transform vehicles like an Arwing into a walker or a Landmaster into a Gravmaster. A basic but divisive part Star Fox ZeroIts identity was the use of the Wii U gamepad for gyroscopic aiming along with stick-stick movement of the vehicle. This control scheme proved somewhat frustrating for many players, leading to generally mixed reviews of the game.
Star Fox (2026)
Ten years later Star Fox Zero Launched, the franchise is back with another revamp Star Fox 64. 2026 Star Fox for Nintendo Switch 2 is confirmed to follow the same story beats and map layout as Star Fox 64with improved visuals and new cutscenes that provide more context for missions. However, this release is set to also include unique features such as a PvP mode that pits Team Star Fox against Team Star Wolf, and a co-op mode where one player controls a vehicle with one Joy-Con while the other aims with the other Joy-Con in mouse mode. It is not clear whether any functions from Star Fox Zero will be returning in addition to those originating from Star Fox 64.
