Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth director not interested in FF6 remake

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Trilogy director Naoki Hamaguchi knows everyone wants him to make a Final Fantasy 6 remake, but he thinks the project would be in “better hands” with another developer.

For a long time, one of the most requested game remakes was undeniably Final Fantasy 7, with Square Enix constantly teasing the possibility of bringing Cloud back in a big way. What once seemed impossible has since turned into a massive remake project spanning three games that has been in the works for nearly a decade.

Now that we're nearing the end of the remake trilogy with Final Fantasy 7 Revelation next year, everyone is wondering what the game's team, led by director Naoki Hamaguchi, will do next. Many want him to move on to the next Final Fantasy remake, especially FF6, but he thinks it's better left to another developer.

Naoki Hamaguchi thinks the Final Fantasy 6 remake should come from someone else

As pointed out by GamesRadar+, Game Informer recently spoke with Naoki Hamaguchi following the announcement of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation. However, unlike other interviews focused on the game itself, Game Informer actually asked Hamaguchi about what's in store for him when the remake trilogy is finally done.

The opening sequence of Final Fantasy 6 is perfect

A powerful opening to a timeless classic.

For now, Hamaguchi says he is “fully focused” on finishing Revelation and making sure the remake series is in “perfect condition.” That being said, the director acknowledged that he's seeing a lot of fans asking him to take on another Final Fantasy 6 remake, something that Square Enix PR apparently pointed out to Game Informer is entirely hypothetical for now.

Despite all these demands, Hamaguchi says that the Final Fantasy 6 remake, or indeed any remake in the series, could end up being “someone else's” and that he personally thinks it would be “in better hands if it went to another creator at Square Enix.” Hamaguchi has previously said that he wants to keep his team together, but perhaps for a new game.

“After this, I want to take on this new challenge with another RPG title, whether it's Final Fantasy or another IP. Again, we don't know. But personally, if it's not Final Fantasy, it's also exciting because it can be a challenge for me. So, whatever it is, I hope the fans can look forward to it.” – Naoki Hamaguchi

This may come as a disappointment to anyone who was hoping Hamaguchi would jump straight to the FF6 remake, but it's not that surprising when you consider how long he spent with Cloud and the gang. Final Fantasy 6 could undoubtedly use even more work to remaster as an older game, and it's probably time for Hamaguchi to get a chance to make more of his own brand at Square Enix.
