FPS games that are basically Fallout with great gameplay

Are you huge? Fallout fan itching for the next (probably far) major entry in the franchise? Us too, even though Fallout 76 is holding back the tides right now, we really want a brand new game set in Bethesda's weird, crazy, and scary retro-futuristic wasteland, especially with how good the Amazon Prime adaptation was.

Since we're probably going to be waiting a while longer, why not check out the other games that are, for better or for worse almost the same as Fallout? Sure, they all have their differences, but the similarities are hard to ignore. To make it better, they all play great, meaning you can put the VATS-shaped hole in your life aside for now.

Atomfall

He wears his inspirations on his sleeve

It's not hard to see where Atomfall drew inspiration for his ideas. It's a post-apocalyptic survival shooter set in an alternate history where a nuclear disaster has covered part of Cumberland in radioactive fallout. Your character wakes up in a bunker with no memory of who they are or how they got there. If it doesn't sound like it Fallout, I don't know what he's doing.

The obvious difference here is that Atomfall takes place in England rather than the US (unless you played excellent Fallout London mod, in which case it will feel even more familiar), but the starker contrast is this game's dedication to the “survival” side of the gameplay loop. Scavenging, crafting, and managing things like your character's heart rate are all factors here that tend to make stealth approach rather than one of many options to choose from.

Borderlands 2

Everyone likes a sense of humor

The Border series is essentially the flip side of the same coin as Bethesda Fallout games. Both are FPS RPGs with a strong sense of comedic timing, satirical world-building, and environments full of terrifying creatures. They are aliens border, they are mutants Fallout, but the essence is the same.

Borderlands 2 Replay Reveals Secret Ingredient Borderlands 3 & 4 Missing (And It's Not Just Handsome Jack)

I recently finished playing Borderlands 2 over the holidays and it showed me exactly what Borderlands 3 and Borderlands 4 were missing.

There are plenty of other details that set the two franchises apart, but they're more similar than meets the eye. With that in mind, it's the best Border the series is still Borderlands 2, and so there's really no other game I'd recommend. If you like absurd humor and class-building RPG elements Fallout 3 and further, then you'll probably have a good time here too.

Outer worlds 2

Let's go to space

Obsidian Entertainment has been around for a few years now long period, extending up to 2004 and KOTOR 2. However, despite the breadth of its work, the studio is still the most famous Fallout: New Vegas, widely regarded as the best of the modern Fallout games and one of the best open world RPG ever. So it's no surprise that the developer's own sci-fi franchise, outer worlds it has many similarities to a post-apocalyptic world Fallout.

While there's no VATS system, the shootouts in the two series are otherwise pretty similar, except for the weird and wacky types of firearms you can use. RPG systems also play a major role in both gameplay and narrative, with stat-based conversation options opening up new potential avenues. Obsidian is primarily known for its fantastic writing and both Outer worlds and its excellent sequel, outer worlds 2, show off that power in the pices.

Cyberpunk 2077

The apocalypse is monetized

Make no mistake, the world in Cyberpunk 2077 ends; it happens slowly and out of sight. One trip to the barren wastelands outside of Night City will show you just how bad it really is, but within the confines of the cyber metropolis, everything seems fine. Not great, but good. Unlike Fallout's the apocalypse that's right in your face Cyberpunk he is gentle.

in addition to Cyberpunk 2077 is also a great first-person RPG. Its gameplay hasn't always been great, but after years of updates and phenomenal DLC, it now plays as one of the best games of the current generation. There are skills, branching conversations, and plenty of side activities, all in a sci-fi world that shines through a critical lens in its own right. It's really just right Fallout with a bunch of glam thrown over the top and some cyberware installed in the brain.

STALKER 2: Heart of Chernobyl

Let's Get Real

It's a lot STALKER 2: Heart of Chernobyl and its predecessors, from which it draws Fallout lore, although the first STALKER the game came out a year and a half ago Fallout 3. he said that STALKER he takes himself much more seriously. That's no kicking Fallout, each series has a tone it's going for, but in terms of the harshness of each apocalypse, STALKER 2 they don't rustle.

16 Best Open World FPS Games, Ranked

FPS and open-world genres are two of the most popular games. Put them together and you have a serious recipe for success.

It is essentially a survival game with FPS elements. Ammo and resources are scarce and you won't just find tons lying around inside the enemy camp. You must prepare in advance, use what you have wisely, and above all, take a cautious approach; after all, you are just one lone Stalker in a very dangerous world. Even after taking these precautions, the zone can still catch you by surprise. That's the danger that comes from exploring the twisted and desolate wasteland.

Metro Exodus

Make every shot count

Metro Exodus is probably the least RPG-like game on this list (yet), but even if it doesn't capture that aspect Fallout to the same extent, his depiction of the post-apocalyptic wasteland is equally profound and immersive. There are times when Fallout can turn into outright horror and Subway it often does the same, ramping up the tension while burning through your precious resources only to barely make it out alive.

Metro Exodus it has a sense of place that is virtually unparalleled in the genre. From using ammunition as currency to creative weapons that use alternative ammunition (like the Tihar, a makeshift air gun), the world Subway it constantly reinforces the idea you're scrambling for at every turn. There are no big loot finds or secret stashes in a long-forgotten vault. While they do the details Fallout more fun, their absence in Metro Exodus to make it a more challenging and thus more rewarding game.

Far Cry New Dawn

Joseph Seed was right

Games like Far Cry New Dawn he is not afraid to show his love Fallout from the roofs. This is not a negative; after all Fallout is one of the most popular gaming franchises on the planet. But sometimes that adoration can get in the way of a game that stands out on its own merits.

Games where the villain proves they were right

These video games gradually reveal that the villain's motives, while misguided, have a basis in truth, leading to thought-provoking conclusions.

Post-apocalyptic traps New Dawn's the world will be very familiar Fallout fans, while the color palette gives Anger 2 fan flashbacks. That said, while some of it may be derivative, you can't deny that Far Cry series has boasted excellent game systems for over a decade and A new dawn there is no other. It's a very fun game and has a lot to do Fallout, so it's an easy recommendation, even if it's not the most creative game in the world Far Cry series.

Chernobylite

Sensation of Pressure

It's not noticeable from the outside, but Chernobylite is a game that constantly presents you with the consequences of your actions. Narrative branching opportunities can arise at any time, and the solution is not always obvious. It's certainly not always a “good” choice, because in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, people are far more willing to take advantage of a kind soul.

Although it's not as complete an apocalypse as Fallout's world, a branching story, sci-fi elements, and surprisingly deep base-building mechanics all harken back to Fallout 3 and 4. Chernobylite is an impressively written and surprisingly heartfelt story that came and went too quickly, and if you're a fan Fallout already do yourself a favor and try this game.
