Ghost of Yotei confirms that Jin spared his uncle in Tsushima

Eagle-eyed Ghost of Yotei players have noticed a small detail that seemingly confirms once and for all that the ending in Ghost of Tsushima was canon.

Ghost of Tsushima is over five years old at this point, but that hasn't stopped fans from debating the game's many endings and which one is actually canon. For those who don't know, Tsushima ends with Jin having to choose between sparing his uncle or fulfilling his wish for an honorable death.

Given Jin's relationship with his uncle, this may seem like an easy choice, but Tsushima's approach to honor and the samurai code end up making it much more difficult. Sucker Punch turned around and confirmed which of Tsushima's endings is canon, but there's a small detail in Yotei that works as our best evidence so far.

Pay attention to the red leaves

As you probably already know, Ghost of Yotei has a side quest that allows Atsu to visit Jin Sakai's house in Ezo and even see his grave, allowing you to get his Storm Sword and Ghost Mask. That's already a great easter egg for fans, but there's a small detail on Jin's grave that makes it even more interesting.

On the Ghost subreddit, StrongWafer2631 asked fans what they thought the ending of the Tsushima canon was now that we know how Jin's story ends and where he ended up. Almost all comments agree that Jin spared his uncle, but mrblonde55 points out that Yotei even implies this because Jin's grave is covered in red leaves.

This might not seem like an important detail, but those red leaves are a symbolic part of the ending where Jin spares his uncle, so their appearance at his grave could be a subtle hint of the end of the Tsushima canon. It could also just be a reference to the red leaves and tree that appeared in Jin and Shimura's final fight, but most fans took it as more of a canon allusion.

There's also the fact that Jin fled Tsushima after the events of that game, which according to QuietSync is because he's running from people hunting him for dishonorably sparing his uncle.

Sucker Punch has previously given some mixed reports about which Tsushima ending is canon. Game director Nate Fox said that sparing him is a canon ending in the past, before noting that both endings are valid in Yotei, so it's a bit confusing overall. However, the red leaves indicate which of the two outcomes is the one Sucker Punch is aiming for.
