2025 has been one stunning announcement after another as far as PlayStation and Xbox are breaking down the barriers between the two platforms, effectively ending the console wars. Xbox hit the ground running last year when it brought a few of its games to PlayStation, but in 2025 it stepped it up a notch with the release of games like Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and Forza Horizon 5 on PS5.
PlayStation, to its credit, also gave the Xbox some games in return. The MLB: The Show games have been coming to Xbox for a few years now (although it wasn't actually on PlayStation) and recently, Helldivers 2 came to Xbox. Many Xbox owners have been clamoring for the popular live service co-op game to come to Xbox, and were thrilled when it did. The same day Helldivers 2 came to xbox Gears of War: Reloaded came to PS5.
Halo: Campaign Evolved will be released on PS5 in 2026
That day Helldivers 2 and Gears of War: Reloaded released on Xbox Series X/S and PS5, respectively, in August was the first day that hell froze over for PlayStation and Xbox this year. Now hell has frozen over again because something that would have been unthinkable just two years ago has finally happened: Xbox has confirmed it Halo coming to PS5. As announced at the Xbox flagship Halo World Championships Halo franchise will debut on PS5 Halo: Campaign Evolved next year.
Halo: Campaign Evolved is a remake of the original Halo game campaign. It boasts vastly improved graphics, all-new missions, 2-player split-screen, and 4-player online co-op. Its release on PS5 will break a 25-year streak Halo games released as Xbox console exclusives. It's also effectively the final nail in the coffin when it comes to the console wars. It's clear that Xbox isn't interested in trying to compete in the console space like it once was.
We'll see if PlayStation returns the favor by bringing an equivalent franchise to Xbox. PlayStation has shown a willingness to bring many of its big games to PC, so maybe it can be persuaded to do the same for Xbox. The next-gen Xbox is rumored to have access to Steam, and if that turns out to be true, PlayStation exclusives will still be playable on Xbox hardware. Regardless, even though Xbox insists it's making a next-gen console, giving up its exclusives marks the end of an era and Halo the arrival of the PS5 is really a hell of a cold one for both brands.
