How strong is Boruto Uzumaki compared to Naruto Baryon Mode?

The following article contains spoilers for Naruto, Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, and Boruto: Two Blue Vortex.

As Boruto still focuses on the Shinju clones, we learn more about the abilities of many of the characters. Boruto Uzumaki has shown off some of his new techniques in previous arcs, but the story still needs to show him more in this Mamushi arc, especially after his sword is upgraded by Sumire Kakei. The story also foreshadows an ominous future after Boruto enlists the help of Momoshiki Otsutsuki, who is sealed inside him due to karma, to defeat Jura and the other clones.

The possibility of Boruto eventually succumbing to Momoshiki has been teased ever since the manga returned and is the main reason why Kawaki wants to kill his brother. So it wouldn't be a surprise, but rather something that most readers expect, especially considering the recent development of the story. Plus, it makes a lot of sense since Boruto is now strong enough to be a scary villain, and fits the tone the manga has taken. But how does he compare to Naruto in Baryon Mode?

Boruto: The Next Step After Baryon Mode Explained

Baryon Mode is not the last step for Naruto Uzumaki. His return will be big with new power.

How Naruto Uzumaki obtained Baryon Mode

Baryon Mode is a transformation introduced in Boruto: Naruto Next Generationsand is the ultimate form of Naruto Uzumaki, at least until the series introduces another power-up stronger than this one. He unlocked it by fusing his chakra with Kurama's in a manner reminiscent of nuclear fusion. Like his real-world counterpart, this fusion allows Naruto to produce massive amounts of energy and increase his power level exponentially.

In addition to gaining massive amounts of chakra, Naruto also becomes incredibly fast, to the point that Sasuke's Sharingan cannot track him and even Isshiki's Daikokuten is outmatched by Naruto's new abilities. This form also resembles the Will of Fire.

This transformation was introduced in Chapter 52 and used for only one reason, which will be described later in this article. As Naruto's hair becomes finer and he also has some fox-like features, fans often compare this condition to Dragon Ball's Super Saiyan transformation. It is sometimes compared to Super Saiyan 4 because of the animal characteristics or Ultra Instinct because that is Goku's final form (for now, because DBS also likely to introduce new powers once he returns).

Disadvantages of the Baryon mode

Baryon Mode is so powerful that both Sasuke Uchiha and Isshiki Otsutsuki were shocked by Naruto's tremendous increase in chakra and strength. With it, Naruto is able to overcome Isshiki and drain his life, allowing Kawaki to deliver the final blow. However, great powers in the series are often accompanied by great flaws, and this was no exception; it's like a double-edged sword.

Combining his chakra, the Nine-Tails sacrificed his own life as a last resort, which serves to illustrate how powerful the Otsutsuki clan can be, as it is implied that Isshiki is not even a top member, although he is still stronger than Kaguya. However, since we still don't know much about the clan structure, Isshiki could also be a high-ranking member and part of the main family.

This form drains Naruto and drains Kurama's life (it actually drains Naruto's life as well, but Kurama sacrifices himself to save Naruto), effectively killing him, at least for a short while, given that Kurama is back. Boruto: Two Blue Vortexes. Due to the transformation resulting in the (temporary) death of the Nine-Tails, Naruto loses his Jinchuriki status and can no longer access the form. However, the continuation of the manga suggests that someone else could eventually use this power.

Is Boruto stronger than Baryon Mode?

Other Shinju could appear in the two Blue Vortex Chapter 30 leaks

While Boruto: Two Blue Vortexes will still showcase all of Boruto's new abilities and powers, it already seems pretty clear that he's probably equal to or stronger than Naruto Baryon Mode. Even in his prime, Naruto was unable to actually defeat Isshiki; as mentioned, he collapsed in exhaustion, leaving Kawaki to finish the job. Since Boruto is now Otsutsuki's level due to Momoshiki's karma, it is quite likely that Boruto is stronger than Baryon Mode. Momoshiki is believed to be of higher status (probably part of the main branch of the family), but is often considered less powerful than Isshiki.

Rasengan Uzuhiko is an incredibly powerful jutsu and probably matches the output of Baryon Mode, especially since Boruto used it to control the code with ease. Besides, the Shinju clones already seem stronger than Naruto. Since Boruto can hold his own against at least some of them (no match for Jura yet), it's hard to imagine him not being able to fight Baryon Mode, especially if he used the Flying Raijin to counter Naruto's speed.

Of course, raw ability isn't everything in battle. A clever ninja can outmaneuver a stronger opponent by exploiting weaknesses; original Naruto the manga proves it. Since Baryon mode has a “time limit” as it drains the user, Boruto could probably survive it and defeat Naruto. However, since it is unlikely that Naruto will ever enter this form again, we will never know for sure.

What level is Boruto in Two Blue Vortex?

Boruto has yet to show his full power Two blue swirlsafter several years of intense training with Sasuke Uchiha, enough time to master his Otsutsuki abilities. However, it is already clear that he is immensely powerful, even able to manipulate chakra from the planet with his Rasengan Uzuhiko. The story also suggests that he became incredibly fast. And that's part of the problem.

It's not just Boruto who's insanely powerful now. Sarada Uchiha, especially with her Mangekyo Sharingan's Ohirume, and Kawaki have also gotten far stronger. And the enemies, Shinju clones for now, are also much more powerful than all previous enemies. Although this is a natural progression as the story is likely preparing to introduce more Otsutsuki with shinjutsu abilities, it just feels like the power system is broken.

At this rate, when Sasuke and Naruto come back on the scene, they'll probably have new powers as well, even though the new generation has probably already surpassed them. While the story progresses smoothly, it feels a bit like Kishimoto is just following along Dragon Ball a performance scaling pattern that has become repetitive.

Will Himawari Unlock Baryon Mode?

Himawari talks to Kurama inside her mind.
Himawari talks to Kurama inside her mind.

In the first chapters Boruto: Two Blue VortexesKishimoto brought Kurama back into the story. But it's not about Naruto anymore: the new Jinchuriki is Himawari Uzumaki. This may be disappointing to some, as the Nine-Tails seem to have become something of a family business. Instead of another character becoming a Jinchuriki, it's about Naruto's family tree again. Well, at least it's not Boruto.

In any case, the manga hints that it might delve deeper into how Himawari became a Jinchuriki. While Kurama simply “sprouted” inside her, the story suggests a connection to when she knocked him out. Additionally, some fans speculate that she could be the Ten Tails, and there is some weight to this theory.

However, death is not eternal for us Biju. Even if our body or soul perishes, in time a grain of us will sprout somewhere and we will manage to come back to life. (…) No one knows how long it will last or where it may sprout. Even less so that it would be inside his daughter and so soon… the universe is full of mysteries.

— Nine Tails in Boruto TBV Chapter 10

Himawari is still learning her abilities as a Jinchuriki, but this gives her enormous potential to grow. Since Baryon's mode is exclusive to those who hold Tailed Beasts within them, it opens up the possibility that by the end of the manga, she will eventually engage in this transformation to help defeat the final villain (which will likely be Otsutsuki). However, since this form is a last resort, Himawari would essentially need to be in a do-or-die situation.

Even if he isn't Ten Tails, he will likely unlock new powers, possibly even stronger than Baryon Mode. This could either be a new transformation or just a massive boost that surpasses anything Naruto has achieved as a Jinchuriki. It might even be the key to her learning shinjutsu techniques.
