Before you can get the Goat and subsequently the Goat's Milk, you must purchase the Goat Shed schematic in the Drawing Room next to Balthazar's Shop. It costs 10,000 gold coins, so it may take a while before you can afford it Luma Island. Once you have the schematic, you will need to build a shed on your farm. You will need the following materials for this:

  • 20 mountain boards
  • 25 fern leaves
  • Five copper bars
  • 10 moonstones

The Mountain Planks and Moonstone can only be found when you reach the Mountain, so you'll need to unlock them before you can finish building the Goat Hut. Mountain Planks can be crafted with the Mountain Wood Saw, but to get enough Moon Ore for the Bars, you'll need to enter the Mountain Cave. To find it, simply turn left and follow the path when you first enter the Mountain.

Once you build the shed, you'll need to buy goats from the farm shop in town. They cost 5000 gold each and you can place two goats at a time in the shed. Just be sure to put a fence around their shed to keep them from wandering off.

You can get goat milk by feeding the goats in your shed hay once a day. Hay can be obtained by chopping any grass with an ax, and you can use the R key to throw it on the ground for your goats to eat.

To make life easier, you can also invest in a trough and fill it with hay so your goats always have something to eat even when you're not there. This will also save you the effort of having to throw hay once a day. You can get the Trough Diagram from the blueprint shop and it costs 10,000 gold coins. However, unlike the goat shed, the material costs for its construction are much lower:

  • Five Farm Wood
  • One copper rod
  • 50 Hay

Goats are also useful for warding off foxes Luma Island. Foxes start appearing when you get chickens on the farm and force the chickens to hide in their coop – meaning they don't lay eggs or kill bugs bothering your plants. Usually you can get rid of foxes by chasing them yourself and they will run away all day, but they will reappear every morning. So having a goat to deal with them will save you a lot of time and protect your chickens.
