In the age of games-as-a-service and online multiplayer, nothing seems to last forever. Game termination announcements are all too common these days. Whether it's running on outdated hardware that's no longer supported, or it's failed to generate enough player interest to justify keeping the online servers running, it's always disappointing when a game announces the end of its service.
While some live game shutdowns come with fanfare, such as the shutdown Concord in September 2024, just two weeks after launch, the others go quietly into the night. So far in 2026, 52 games have been completed around the halfway point of the year. EA games seem to be getting shut down left and right, but other notable games have suffered the same fate.
Even more games have been removed from stores, but are still playable for players who have already purchased them. This list includes all games that have been taken completely offline and will no longer be playable in 2026.

BioWare said goodbye to Anthem in January 2026
The year kicked off with several EA games being discontinued in January, including BioWare's infamous live-service RPG. Anthem. Although the game received a mixed response when it launched in 2019, BioWare struggled to embrace it AnthemInitial criticism to heart and reboot the game in early 2020. However, these plans never gained traction and all development stopped on Anthem in 2021, although the servers remained active until earlier this year.
AnthemEA's demise was also followed by two other EA games that were discontinued in the same month: The Sims Mobile and NBA Live 19. The Sims fans still have access The Sims 4despite turning off the mobile game and Project Renéfurther development The Sims franchise, is still in development. NBA Live 19on the other hand, is the last entry in the franchise, with the series being canceled in 2019.
Highguard only lasted 45 days before being shut down
High Guardian is another unfortunate example of a high-profile live service game that failed to capture the attention of players. Going from “one more thing” at The Game Awards 2025 to releasing a month later to shutting down completely in just a few months. High Guardian as the latest victim of the live service burnout that players seem to be collectively feeling. While some players have since seen the writing on the wall High GuardianAfter the controversial announcement, others hoped that developer Wildlight Entertainment would find a way to keep players engaged and keep the game alive during a rough market for free-to-play hero shooters. But Wildlight pulled the plug High Guardian this March after the game lost 90% of its players just a week after launch.
Last generation consoles lost support for several games in 2026
Despite the current generation of consoles taking some time to really take off, it's clear that time is running out for gamers who still use their PS4 or Xbox One to play online games. So far in 2026, how popular gacha game from HoYoverse Genshin Impact and Embark Studios' competitive shooter Final ended the online service for the PlayStation 4. While these games are still going strong on other platforms, players on the previous generation of consoles no longer have access to the game's servers.

PUBG: Blindspot came and went with little notice
A spin-off of the popular Battle Royale game, PUBG: Blindspot was a 5v5 top-down tactical shooter that was released into Early Access on Steam on February 4, 2026. I like High Guardianthe game lasted a little over a month or so before being pulled from Steam and completely discontinued on March 30th. It is surprising that a name as big as PUBG it suffered from an obvious marketing problem, but the game peaked at just over 3,000 players on the platform before a dramatic decline leading to its shutdown.
EA's classic shutdown of games continued until April 2026
This year has not been kind to fans of EA games, with more shutdowns of some of the publisher's titles coming in April. Both online servers for Dragon Age: Inquisition and plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare were shut down for the PS3 versions of the games on April 28. Even though these games are on platforms two generations removed from the current hardware, it is still sad to know that they will no longer be available due to preservation.
Notable games still face shutdown in 2026 and beyond
- Rec Room — June 1
- Chronicles of Wizards — June 19
- Battlefield Hardline — June 22
- The Elder Scrolls: Blades — June 30
- New world (in-game purchases prohibited) — July 20
- NBA 2K25 — December 31
- TopSpin 2K25 — December 31
As if the list of games that have already been shut down in 2026 wasn't grim enough, there are still plenty more titles slated to be shut down in the coming year. Long term VR game Rec Room also ends on June 1st, marking the end of an era for VR enthusiasts. Quantic Dreams' Chronicles of Wizards it was recently announced that it will be discontinued next month after just three months in Early Access.
Bethesda mobile game The Elder Scrolls: Blades will be shut down on June 30 and Battlefield Hardline servers will be offline next month as well. MMO by Amazon Games New world in-game purchases will be removed in July 2026 in anticipation of the shutdown of game servers in January 2027. NBA 2K25 and TopSpin 2K25 their online services are also planned to be discontinued at the end of this year. It can be daunting to invest time and effort into a live service game knowing it will inevitably end, but there are still plenty of live service success stories that have led to long-term pillars of the gaming community that are still standing for the foreseeable future.
