Invincible is finally about to make its first major splash in the video game world, and it's doing so in the form of a fighting game. Invincible VS is out on PC and consoles today, and its reviews paint a promising picture for Invincible fans, fighting game fans, but especially those with a foot in both worlds.
Invincible VS debuts to strong review scores
Invincible VS currently has a 79 on OpenCritic. No, not enough to breathe the more rarefied air of Saros and Pokopia, but it will never score as high. 79 is a pretty great score for a game that not only tries to adapt a very popular comic book and TV show, but does so in a genre that most people probably didn't expect before Invincible VS was announced.
As more reviews are added, there is also a chance that the score will keep increasing.
Here at TheGamer, George Foster gave Invincible VS a 4/5. “Excellent and friendly mechanics, a well-rounded roster, and plenty of fanservice make Invincible VS not only an excellent tag team fighter, but also a game the series has long deserved,” reads our review, with the only disappointments being the short story mode and limited offline offerings.
Elsewhere, Giant Bomb gave a slightly lower 3.5/5 to the newest competitor in the fighting game arena. “Invincible VS is clearly a game by FGC for FGC, resulting in a double-edged sword,” reads GB's review, noting that fighting game fans will likely enjoy a lot, but there may not be much for the casual fan.
Worth Playing's review is a bit more optimistic, giving Invincible VS an 8.5/10. “The combat system is familiar but solid, and while it doesn't offer anything revolutionary compared to other tag fighters, its accessibility ensures that players of all skill levels will be able to enjoy themselves immediately,” writes the reviewer.
A fantastic fighter that was sometimes held back a bit by the limited single player options
While the limited story may be a drawback for many people, the things that Invincible VS gets right, at least according to its reviews, suggest that it could find its own place in the fighting game genre. That's easier said than done. Not only is the fighting genre full of familiar names that even the most casual gamer will instantly recognize, but it's incredibly difficult to make a new entry in one of these series, let alone a brand new one like Invincible VS, rather than something borrowed from old fighting games.
It looks like Quarter Up and Skybound could have pulled it off well with Invincible VS. These first impressions suggest that fighting game fans will find something to like here, and while there isn't much to its story, the novelty of pitting fully voiced Viltrumites against each other alongside other characters from the show will no doubt be a draw for fans of the show.
