TheGamer got the chance to kick off Riftbound: Vendetta's preview season by revealing one of the set's champion unit cards: Jayce, Brilliant Inventor.
We know from previous leaks that Jayce is a mind/body legend (a unique combination) and the following reveal is about Jayce's Mind (Blue) champion card. The card (modeled after Jayce's appearance in Arcane) also has an alternate version that is a close-up of his Zenith Games appearance from League of Legends.
A man of progress
Jayce, Brilliant Inventor is a 6 Energy + 1 Blue Power card that says “When you play me, or the first time you play non-token gear each turn, you can prepare something other than me that is exhausted.”
While relatively expensive, the ability to read nothing playing Jayce or the device is quite versatile. You can prepare a depleted unit or powerful equipment like Vanguard Armory (in non-Jayce blue decks since it's Blue/Orange).
I feel there are more obvious combinations/uses of this card waiting to be discovered in Vendetta. Jayce seems to be designed around the fact that gear stays on the board indefinitely – expect combos that involve tapping and re-crafting gear to maximize value in Jayce decks.
Of course, we also received a Jayce champion unit in Spiritforged, which will also be eligible for use as a select champion in the Jayce deck. This card, Jayce, Man of Progress, allows you to kill one of your devices to play a bigger device. Most commonly used in Control Lux decks to cheat Vanguard Armory during the early turn.
Both the flesh (orange) version of Jayce and his champion legend have yet to be revealed, but the leak of the former suggests that you'll be able to choose one of three bonus effects when the card is ready, which would naturally work with Jayce, Brilliant Inventor.
The champion legend card text will certainly be key to unlocking the power of Jayce's champion units, but we won't know the details of those interactions until the card is revealed.
Vendetta's demo season will continue until July 18th, with a worldwide release on July 31st.
