In an effort to differentiate it from other extraction shooters, Bungie is adding an experimental PvE mode Marathon next month. The past few weeks have been incredibly rough for Bungie, especially after the recent layoffs that affected a significant portion of the team. fair or not Marathon became the easiest target Fate 2 players struggling to make sense of the game's abrupt ending, and Bungie's decision to bring PvE to the extraction shooter makes it all the more painful.
Extraction shooters are often built around PvPvE, but Bungie is trying to expand Marathonhorizons. The developer's answer to the extraction genre has struggled to reach high player numbers since its launch, but the new mode could potentially entice newcomers to give the game a try. MarathonA PvE mode is just around the corner, and while that might be exciting for some players, it also puts Bungie's new shooter in an awkward position next to it. Fate 2the last days.

After Marathon's Sponsored Survival has proven to be a fairly well-received addition to the game, it will be interesting to see how players react to Vault Breaker. Marathon Getting PvE right after the end of Destiny 2 is painful timing
Fate 2's game thrived on PvE, so Marathon getting your own dedicated PvE mode feels like painful timing more than anything else. It leads to MarathonAt launch, Bungie seemed to want the game to differentiate itself as a niche extraction shooter that could compete with games like ARC Raiders. However, adding a PvE-only option to the mix complicates that identity, especially now Fate 2 players have no new live service content to look forward to.
There is a world where both Fate 2 and Marathon could thrive together with two distinct identities. Unfortunately, it looks like players will never get the satisfaction of seeing this world come to life. Recent player activity nearby Fate 2 made it clear that Bungie's long-running shooter still has a passionate audience. Even so, with the latest layoffs, it's hard to imagine Bungie and Sony supporting it Fate 2 and Marathon as full-fledged, long-term pillars at the same time.
Bring PvE to instead Marathon it feels like Bungie is trying to push itself Fate 2 players somewhere else. It's an understandable strategy, but it's also deeply frustrating for players who would rather experience PvE in a game they already love rather than feel pushed to another game. Marathon however, it needs to bounce back in a big way this year, so Bungie may have to constantly rethink what the game is meant to be.
A PvE mode may not be enough to attract the number of new players Bungie needs. One obvious way for Bungie to expand its audience is to do Marathon free-to-play, but only time will tell if that actually happens.
Marathon's PvE mode makes Destiny 3 feel even less likely
There is currently no way to know what will happen Fate 3but plenty of fans will continue to hold out hope. However, right now is the future Fate the franchise looks incredibly grim and Marathon getting a full-time PvE mode would only enhance that feeling. If Vault Breaker proves to be the key that draws consistent players to Marathon, then Bungie may have even less reason to favor Fate 3.
Only time will tell if Marathon's PvE is as successful as Bungie and Sony want it to be. The game has only been out for a few months and is competing with the likes ARC Raiders it was clearly an uphill battle. Marathon it still has potential and room to grow, but if that growth comes from getting closer to a PvE type of experience Fate fans just lost, then Vault Breaker might end up feeling smart Marathon update and another painful reminder of what Fate 2 won't be anymore.
